Climate question: How well can climate models simulate the so-called Vb Grosswetterlage? Are there any studies available?
Vb is underlying the dynamics of the current extreme weather situation in Central Europe. It originates over the very warm Mediterranean Sea (Genoa Low) …

@AntjeWeisheimer I guess in the Lamb weather type framework you'd be looking at cyclonic south westerlies (CSW) over the Northern med. Thats not disaggregated in the paper: there are maps of mean weather type (WT) error, and taylor diagrams for each WT, but no error maps for each WT.

@jasonhickel Such a fascinating and hopeful analysis. Just trying to visualise this: apart from the very obvious stuff like frequent flying, yachts etc, can you give an example of the kind of resource intensive, low-welfare production we would want to roll-back?

@TEGNicholasCode Would you just use Cubed in the same way you'd use dask? It just does different stuff in the backend? May give it a go if the learning curve is quite shallow

The dask status monitor is a dangerous tool. Yes it helps me make my code more efficient, but sometimes I just end up watching a green bar gradually fill up for 10 mins instead of doing something productive.

@TEGNicholasCode Now and again! Currently it's not going very well aha. Trying to pull 400,000 1/2 hourly global precip fields from NASA cloud and reduce them to 6h sums over Europe. xr.resample seems very inefficient for this, my graphs were >100mb. But I've found a parameter set now that works.

@DorringtonJosh It is mesmerizing... I didn't realise you were a regular dask user! On what platform? (i.e. HPC, cloud?) I would love to chat about how that's going for you and what could be improved

After two long days on the train, we have now moved from Karlsruhe, Germany to Bergen, Norway! Very excited to be starting my MSCA fellowship at @UiB in a couple of weeks! I will be continuing to work on the dynamics of extreme rainfall, but now with an eye on climate timescales
