We lost my dad today, around 4:30 p.m. I am shattered. He is and forever will be my light, my hero, my best friend. The person who knows me best in the world. The most compassionate soul and best human I’ve ever known. I will write more, much more, soon. For now, a short thread.

Finally deleted this infernal app from my phone. I will still be logging in from time to time on laptop, because sadly I do need to keep an eye on here for work, but no reason to keep this soul-sucking mess ever-present on my phone.

@DanOhta Yup. It’s only through my special interest-level focus on stuff like the Station Nightclub fire that I now damn well know the second I see flame in a space like that I am booking it for the nearest direct exit. Immediately.

@DoubleEmMartin Incidents exactly like this predated Instagram/cellphones 100%. The combination of quick spreading fire and limited exits/poor fire code enforcement has long existed and caused mass casualty events where a significant if not majority of casualties result from trampling.

Phones don’t help, but I think many people don’t necessarily immediately realize how bad an initially moderate-looking fire can get, how quickly. They think they have any number of minutes to get out of the area, when in reality it can be mere seconds.

@geogvma @WassermanJ69066 That’s what I assume too, because like, I’m not naive to issues but in that case I truly don’t know of anything significant. There’s a whole Chinese student community that’s been returning, business, etc.

@j2dumfounded @nickshirleyy It doesn’t draft under age 25, but there are volunteer contract soldiers who are younger, as in any army. Many people 18+ have stepped up to serve by choice. So that part isn’t wrong.

@nickshirleyy OK, but Ukraine doesn’t recruit people under the age of 25. So maybe there were no 22-year-olds there. Just a thought.

I recently went to Ukraine a few months ago, and while standing in this trench, I felt compelled to make this video, warning, Americans and people across the world about how important elections really are. I never posted this video because I was afraid of the backlash I might receive but now I feel like it is more important than ever that this video is seen by others as things continue to escalate in the Ukraine-Russia war at a rapid pace.
