A Scouting Story for the Velocity Experts Back around 2013, Cleveland was one of the organizations I covered as a professional scout. Most clubs gave you four to six organizations if they actually invested in scouting. The cheap organizations? They’d stick two or three pro scouts on eight or nine teams and call it good. It was ridiculous. Anyway, I’m in Cleveland watching the Indians and A’s. There are probably four to six scouts sitting behind home plate, every one of us with a Stalker radar gun and a stopwatch. We’d all point our radar guns at the same pitch, then laugh because one guy would get 92, another 93, another 94, another 95, somebody always swore he had 96… and there was always one radar gun that somehow found 86 mph. Same pitch. Same pitcher. Different gun angles and locations. We’d compare readings, throw out the outliers, average it out, and that’s what went into the report. That’s how pro scouting worked. That starter was sitting right around 94 mph on a Stalker gun—which, in today’s out-of-hand metrics, would be roughly in the 96–98 mph neighborhood. That’s why comparing today’s numbers directly to older Stalker readings can be misleading. Ninth inning. Indians up by one. Nobody out. Coco Crisp gets on first. Chris Perez was slow to the plate—probably around 1.4–1.5 seconds. Every scout behind the plate knew Coco was going. The second Perez committed home, everyone was thinking the same thing: “He’s got the bag.” Coco takes off. Yan Gomes comes up absolutely firing and throws him out anyway. I clicked him at a 1.76 pop time. The other scouts were right there too—1.73, 1.75, 1.77, 1.79. We all looked at each other because we’d just seen one of the quickest game pop times any of us had ever timed. To this day, it’s still the fastest pop time I personally saw while scouting. Ready for the punchline? According to today’s metrics, that 1.76 would magically become about a 1.42. Who knew the greatest offseason training program in baseball wasn’t in the weight room or some revolutionary new training technology… It was buying a new radar gun and a new stopwatch.
