@cristiproist @baylorfk @theAGU I have had funding that explicitly would not cover pub fees. I’ve had papers that weren’t published til long after funding expired. Are we expected to write personal checks? How is limiting who can publish a good thing?

@jneeley78 Utterly trivial to detect the aerosols in the stratosphere long before there’s any meaningful climatic effect.

Hypothetically, if someone were to try to do SRM how long could they get away with it before people noticed, and how would we figure out what was happening?

@DougMacMartin Thanks, Doug. Neither-not at all. And of course concerned w/ climate change. My point is only that SG is being turned to by some in power because it suits their agenda, whether you or anyone in the field intend it to or not. Not duped or disingenuous but part of a broader system

There have been several new initiatives aiming to advance solar geoengineering (SG) in climate policy. It would not be a stretch to say that SG advocates (yes, advocates) might be winning the day. Before debate gets too far, let’s be clear about *why* that's the case. THREAD 1/11

@SolarGeoeng I wish people would stop using deliberately misleading terms like "advocates" or "supporters" when describing people who believe in thoughtful evaluation so that any future decisions are better informed. (And baffled as to what here is disturbing?)

@GeoeWatchDebunk @DougMacMartin @geoengineering1 @DKeithClimate @KenCaldeira @AlanRobock For every kg of fuel you produce 1.35kg water, and a modern engine like the Trent 900 consumes 0.56g fuel per kN thrust. You’d need a lot of thrust to get a decent payload to 20km altitude, although I suspect neither todays engines or airframes are capable of getting that high.

Tropopause warming and associated increase in strat H2O is included in SAI modeling and offsets cooling a bit
