This is just one of many examples that make @isaiah_p_taylor so exceptional. I’ve earned a seat in truly elite circles across the military, software industry, broad USA government, and the venture world and I’ve seen the best. Isaiah is one of them and his ability to manifest this dream and build a company, that in turn built a modern nuclear reactor in record speed, is nothing short of the American dream…. He is proving to all of us how special our nation is and we really can do anything! Happy 4th!!

Thank you. There was real risk that it wouldn’t work live. There were concerns with how the chip would fare being run around with, risk of dropping, risk of boot up taking longer or headless mode failing, etc etc… When we actually did it, it took around 10s longer than we expected for the headless server to boot up; it came to like 3 seconds before I clicked the refresh button on stage 😂 control room was freaking out the whole time thinking something failed We will continue to operate live and transparently. At some point a live demo we do will fail, and that will be ok too. We decided at the very beginning that nuclear was going to have to be a transparent industry in order to make the worlds energy

I want to clarify something because I’ve gotten a few questions. Ward 250 is a 100kWt reactor. It is licensed to operate at 100kW thermal power, and peak to 250kW thermal power for up to one day. It is possible that in the future, we will submit a change to our safety basis and push more power out of it—probably a couple MW is easily achievable. The reactor itself is SIZED to 15MW thermal—meaning, the core region is 5m^3, and HTGRs traditionally run at around 3MW/m^3. 5 x 3 = 15. Some HTGRs have run even higher, and there are ideas of how to achieve 6MW/m^3, which would imply 30MW. However, it would be extremely disingenuous of me to talk about this as a 15MW (or 30MW) reactor. It is not. It is a 100kWt reactor. As I am typing this it is currently making 100kWt. Future reactors we’ll make with the same core size but larger cooling systems will make tens of MW, but this one does not. I feel that I should say this because others in the field like to refer to critical assemblies, which as critical assemblies are actually not going to make any power at all, by the theoretical power number that should be achievable by a core of that size. If Valar were to play that game, we would talk about Ward 250 as a 15MW or 30MW reactor. However, Valar does not play that game. You will notice that we did not refer to our Nova Core as a reactor and did not talk about theoretical power output. If you analyze all of our media, we were very careful to never refer to Nova as a reactor or try to characterize power. Why? Because it is a critical assembly built for zero power criticality. In 2018, NASA built a small reactor named KRUSTY on the same machine that we took the Nova core critical on, LANL’s Comet. This was a small Be-moderated reactor with sodium heat pipes and a series of 125W Stirling engines adding to ~1kWe. That is a 1kWe reactor. Nova was built on the exact same machine, and contained a larger volume of fuel. But we did not say anything about theoretical power output or call it a “1kW reactor” or some nonsense. Because despite the Nova core containing coolant channels, there there was no cooling system attached to it. Ward 250 is a 100kWt reactor… because it makes 100kWt. It is making 100kWt right now.

I'm excited to announce @Astranis has raised $450 million of new capital. All of it so we can scale to meet surging demand for advanced high-orbit spacecraft— for GEO, MEO, and beyond. This includes a Series E led by Snowpoint and Franklin Templeton, with Andreessen Horowitz, BlackRock, Baillie Gifford, Fidelity, BAM Elevate, Nimble Partners, and Friends & Family Capital, participating alongside many others, totaling $300 million. A delayed-draw credit facility by Trinity Capital adds up to $155 million of additional capital to support the addition of new manufacturing capacity and support future growth. This comes at a turning point in the space industry, and for higher orbits specifically. In our commercial business, we've seen more demand than ever for sovereign systems. As countries and large enterprises need dedicated, secure communications infrastructure. Something that can only be provided from GEO. For our US Government customers, Astranis has proven we can serve as a Neo Prime for some of the most important defense missions. And we are now spooling up to support multiple US Government Programs of Record simultaneously. Astranis has now been selected as Prime for the initial phase of 3 separate Programs of Record— PTS-G, Resilient GPS, and RG-XX/Andromeda. And we’re just getting started. This comes as Space Force is seeing one of the largest budget increases ever seen by a service branch with this year’s budget increasing to $71.1 billion. That is in direct response to new space threats posed by adversaries China and Russia. With GEO being where our most critical national security space assets are, we can’t afford to delay. We need to get new capability deployed with incredible speed, and Astranis is ready to serve. Special thanks to the Astranis existing investors who also participated in this financing round and have backed us from the beginning, including ACE, Elefund, Garage Capital, Helium-3, Liquid2, Metaplanet, and Uncorrelated. This brings Astranis’s total raised to more than $1.2 billion, and this capital goes straight to work.

At the end of the day, security did their job, so I want to start with “well done.” However, there is so much to learn.. including the dog handler who literally followed the dog after the gunman and all these folks that are doing almost negative work. Three of these folks ran away! Literally.. wtf please fire them. Another learning point is a concept called range fans or what is your sector of fire. In this case and most of the others I’ve seen everyone is pointing weapons at each other. They have a known mission, you can talk through the most likely threat and what to do.. I just can’t imagine this was the plan, we won, but we can learn and be better.

China makes 99% of the world’s gallium because they make most of the world’s aluminum, and gallium is a byproduct of making aluminum from bauxite. This is a process that we invented in the United States, but it requires very cheap energy. Valar Atomics is working to fix this.
