Last time I was in Barcelona, I got mugged by a bunch of Romanians then assaulted by a policeman when I went up to him to report the theft. I had bruising on my legs for six weeks. Two Norwegian guys witnessed it and said they’d corroborate my complaint but we were told we’d all spend the night in the cells if we said anything. That’s Barcelona.

Sitting in a pub in Dalston, East London now and there’s a whole shelf of books here. I sat down and thought that’s amazing that they haven’t been nicked. Then, as I looked closer, I realised why. Reports of patent cases volumes 9 and 12, together with a book by Roy Hattersley, are safe from thieves anywhere.

@NeilDotObrien @KemiBadenoch The less complex solution would be to rollback minimum wage increase to younger workers and cut NI increases but that would be yet another u turn and those welfare claimants need paying for ? 🙄

🚨 BREAKING 🚨 Early reports of DISGUSTING SCENES at Cheltenham as the gates open. One eyewitness said "it's a men's toggery disaster zone. Bare ankles, tight strides and shit shoes all over the gaff... I feel sick even before forcing down a Guinness and pretending to like it".

An idea I'm workshopping: if the earthquake magnitude scale wasn't logarithmic, we might have fracking in the UK now

You can only make the accusation of genocide if you deprive the word of its meaning. We all know why you’re doing this - appealing to prejudice to win an election. You are better than that

Key stats
Sam Dumitriu@Sam_Dumitriu

A passage from the Phillipson profile is extremely misleading. She claims England's improvement in PISA scores isn't impressive because recent scores are not much higher than in 2009. She also claims that @michaelgove's reforms failed to close the attainment gap between rich and poor. Both are misleading. Here's some context she 'forgot' to add: - England's Maths Ranking: 27th (2009)➡️11th (2022) - England's Reading Ranking: 25th (2009)➡️13th (2022) - Scores fell during the pandemic everywhere, but England's scores fell by less. - Wales (under Labour) didn't implement Gove's reforms. Their scores are lower than England's and haven't improved. - In fact, the average Welsh pupil now performs at the same level as the most disadvantaged pupils in England. - Scotland is a similar story. They had better scores than England 20 years ago. England's are now higher in all three categories. (Scotland also withdrew from other international metrics.) - Phillipson claims our average scores might be up, but we've done little on equity/fairness. - The problem for her is that England's attainment gap between rich and poor is very low by international standards. - England's 86 point gap is below France's (113), Germany's (111), OECD average (93). The gap is marginally larger than Finland's (83), but our gap is stable while theirs is widening. I agree with the New Statesman article that Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson isn't a Marxist. But let's be clear, she is undermining successful reforms and abusing statistics in the process. Not a Marxist, not good either.

A jury has acquitted six medics who smashed windows at JP Morgan’s European headquarters in London to protest its role in funding the fossil fuel industry. The jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict at Snaresbrook Crown Court after deliberating for just under four hours. The defendants did not dispute that they broke windows, but denied criminal damage on the grounds their action was “proportionate and necessary to save future lives”. A statement issued on their behalf said the defendants acted “amid a worsening climate and health emergency driven in part by JPMorgan’s extensive financing of fossil fuels extraction”. The July 2022 action at the Canary Wharf office came amid a record-breaking UK heatwave linked with over 1,200 excess deaths in four days. The medics cracked eight windows using small hammers and chisels before sitting in front of the office with signs that read “In case of medical climate emergency, break glass.” Following the verdict, defendant Dr Juliette Brown said: “Medicine says we are duty bound to intervene when we see a looming threat, to take the most effective action to save a life, even if it involves breaking the rules.” Maggie Fay, another acquitted defendant, said: “I am so very grateful to the jury for their bravery and really listening to us, and for their attention.” The other medics were Dr David McKelvey, Dr Alice Clack, Ali Rowe and Dr Patrick Hart. This was their second trial, after the first in 2024 ended in a hung jury. JPMorgan Chase contributes more money towards fossil fuel industries than any other bank, the defendants’ statement noted, having invested over $384bn into the sector since the Paris Climate Agreement in 2016.
