I know I will be insulted and told we are ‘defending illegal foreigners’ when we present statistics that disapprove myths that are driving anti migration mobilisation.
Here are the scientifically developed numbers: Statistics SA, the UN and World Bank datasets all place the international migrant population in South Africa at roughly 4% to 5% of the population. SA population is above 62 million.
Census 2022 estimated about 2.4 million migrants (3.9% of the population), while more recent Stats SA migration estimates place the figure at just above 3 million.
International migration studies further show that migration is overwhelmingly driven by regional inequality, wars, underdevelopment, labour demand and economic collapse — not simply “open borders” narratives.
South Africa’s crisis cannot honestly be reduced to migrants while ignoring deindustrialisation, privatisation of SOEs, austerity/budget cuts, corruption and state capture, infrastructure collapse, energy failures, and unemployment affecting more than 12 million people.
As long as our diagnosis is politically biased instead of relying of scientifically proven facts, we will never arrive at real solutions

Does complying with South African law mean Elon Musk must surrender 30% of his business to South Africa? If that's the case, it's an absurd law. Very few serious people would do that, and likely no one is, they tend to use politicians to dodge it, which Elon Musk definitely won't do.
