The Zumwalt was an arc flash. A running motor overheated and the control panel blew. The sailor was reaching up to the HMI panel to shut it off when it blew. Protection settings were either wrong or never set. It could have been much worse, but the panel enclosure contained most of the arc flash until it blew the doors off.

We are seeing a lot of fires on board US Navy ships. Besides, USS Ford, we have also seen fires on Eisenhower, New Orleans and Zumwalt. Now reports that Higgins has a main space fire that knocked out propulsion and power. The fire on Bonhomme Richard in 2020 led to the scrapping of that ship. Fire is an ever present danger on ships, but the Navy needs to examine if there is an uptick in these events.

This is false. Merchant Marine Captain here. I’ve read most of the WW2 Merchant Marine literature on submarine warfare. Moulton claims submarine captains (plural) were executed in war crimes trials for killing crews after an initial strike. @grok correct me if I’m wrong: only one U-boat captain in the entire war, Heinz-Wilhelm Eck of U-852, was tried, convicted, and executed for war crimes. The Peleus case was the only Kriegsmarine U-boat war crimes execution of the Second World War. Many submarines, on both sides, fired torpedoes to disable a ship, then a second round to sink it. That’s the equivalent of the “double tap” Moulton invokes. None of those captains were executed for war crimes. Eck’s case was categorically different. After torpedoing the Greek steamer SS Peleus in the South Atlantic on the night of March 13, 1944, Eck surfaced and lingered on scene for five hours. He didn’t slip away. He worked the area, ordering his crew to machine-gun the rafts and floating wreckage and to lob hand grenades into the debris field, where helpless survivors clung on. A clean kill might have drawn a lesser penalty. He didn’t deliver one. He fired indiscriminately in the dark, killing most, wounding others, and missing four men who feigned death in the water. Some of his crew found this entertaining. Three of the survivors eventually drifted for over a month before a Portuguese steamer rescued them. Many submarine captains abandoned crews in liferaft but it was cruel and unusual punishment to purposely damage liferafts and wound crew. And even with eye witnesses testimony the finding was controversial because he claimed the wreckage would reveal his position. Unless I’m missing another incident, Moulton has taken a single, dark incident and inflated it into a pattern. What makes the comment truly sickening is this: the death penalty served no purpose for the convicted. The United States Military did not execute war criminals for revenge. There deaths had to serve a purpose. The point of executing Eck and his two senior officers was to fix the precedent in history as a warning to every future submarine commander. To raise a giant red flag in the history books for future generations to find and learn from. By framing it the way he does, Moulton severs that lesson from its facts and welds it onto an unrelated argument. If he had at least named Eck, some fraction of today’s submariners would seek out the story and absorb the lessons learned. Instead, he’s whitewashing history. While it’s difficult to prove the causal connection between this aggressive form of “journalistic advocacy” and Republican lawmakers’ eagerness to advance the ball for Democrats, I’m firmly convinced that the left is getting its money’s worth out of this exclusive lobbying force—which has no significant, conservative counter-balance. Congressman Jamie Raskin has been ordered to repay the federal government $304,000 he took from the illegal student loan debt relief program for his daughter's tuition to Stanford. "Mr. Raskin knew the program would be shot down," wrote 14th District Judge Joseph A Barron, "so he pushed his application through using his position." Raskin's defense was that the program was perfectly legal when he took the money. "That defense is summarily rejected."
