This #Thanksgiving, I #givethanks for the many ways the world has improved. Child mortality has fallen. Life expectancy has risen. Countries have gotten richer. Women have gotten more education. Basic water source usage has risen. Basic sanitation has risen. Data from @Gapminder

A reminder that there’s no horserace aspect to counting votes. No one “pulls ahead” in the count or “makes up ground” or “loses their lead” in any real sense. It’s just an artifact of the process, the order in which votes are counted, an order part mandated and part random.

Polls are now open and will close at 8 p.m. California has same-day voter registration, and you have the right to cast a provisional ballot if your name is not on the voter list at your polling place.

Remember that several states with closely watched races do not allow mail ballots to be processed until today. That takes time and will probably result in delays in getting results, particularly in close races. ncsl.org/research/elect…

Remember that a lot of the states we are watching today allow mail ballots to be *postmarked* today and arrive later. Depending on the volume of outstanding mail ballots, this could mean several days of waiting for results in close races. ncsl.org/research/elect…

1. By week’s end, a sizable percentage of the GOP base will believe an absurd conspiracy theory positing that Paul Pelosi was assaulted by his leftist gay lover. Allow me to explain.

Anyone wondering what life as a competitive authoritarian regime will look like in America can look at states like Nevada. @Milbank provides essential reporting about the state of election administration in NV. Every paragraph is mind blowing. Ungated. wapo.st/3TGdC3j

And finally, as much as no one wants to hear this, it is quite possible that control of Congress will not be known until several days (if not several weeks, if a GA runoff occurs and could be decisive) after Election Day.

Yes but no other generation has put together nearly as many theories for why Gilligan can't get off that island or analyzed as carefully the apparent time gap between Luke's training on Dagobah vs. the Falcon's escape to Cloud City. So I call it a draw.

Gen X should be in charge of the US by now. Boomers (and the Silent Generation) still hold prime positions of power, including the presidency. Gen X has yet to secure a majority of seats in Congress and the Supreme Court. 👇 businessinsider.com/gen-x-presiden…

The Voting Rights Act entitles people who struggle with literacy to get help casting their ballots. This is also true for people who do not speak English and those with intellectual disabilities. propub.li/3CgXBdL

Had a discussion tonight with some colleagues about books on American democracy. There isn't a great list out there compiling the latest publications + older volumes. Which ones would you recommend to reporters? Which ones would you recommend to students? To your neighbor?
