Still relevant today. Though they shouldn't need to be.

This is totally pathetic. A cowardly attempt to smudge out our great history through fear of offending some lobby. On a par with the Eurozone putting inoffensive bridges on their banknotes. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

The best piece I’ve seen today is by my friend @Ameer_Kotecha who is very bravely quitting the Foreign Office. He lays out his reasons below. We need a total overhaul of the @FCDOGovUK. “Foreign Office fails to put Britain first. That’s why I’ve quit” 🔗 ⬇️

The point about the 2011 Defence cuts (forced by Brown's massive deficit) was that there was an express pledge made that the significant loss of capabilities would only be temporary. That pledge was broken.
Times Radio@TimesRadio

“Just admit that there was a huge fall in defence spending while you were foreign secretry.” “We did build two aircraft carriers…” “You inherited these from Gordon Brown.” @Afneil debates @WilliamJHague on The Tories’ defence record.

@crankynotions It took JS a long time to learn the modern lessons from Bordelaise court subservience (ECHR, Lux). The core element though was fighting on the other's turf, chevauchees and freebooting ruining French tax bases. Garrisoning/ ceasefire destroyed the gains.

It's amazing that England was ever able to stand toe-to-toe with France, given the latter had about 5x England's population and wealth. But England was a more unified state, and France a typical medieval patchwork. I suspect this influenced Sumption's constitutional views.
Resolute Reader@resolutereader

Slightly over five years after I read volume one and 4231 pages later, I've finally finished the last book in Jonathan Sumption's monumental history of the Hundred Years War.

I've just been overruled on a punctuation point. Apparently if you're quoting an incomplete sentence, it ends inverted comma full stop; if complete full stop inverted comma. Did everyone know this apart from me? He said it was 'quite mad'. He said 'It was quite mad.'

If you’re in the media outside the UK, there’s no need to use the honorifics of the British “nobility” system. He’s Peter Mandelson. “Lord.” 🙄

My most profound, heartfelt condolences to family and friends. Simon was a great man.
Freedom Association - see tfa.net@tfa4freedom

We are very sorry to have to report the sad, sad news of the death of former Director of @TFA4Freedom Simon Richards. Dubbed 'the nicest man in British politics' he was a friend to all and a great promoter of sound causes. We'll be writing to members on this shortly. Photograph below shows him outside the gates of 10 Downing Street on the post-Referendum morning of 24th June 2016 with @RoryBroomfield

The problems go much further than this. Consider the African Union Non-Aggression and Common Defence Pact 2005. Mauritius is not a signatory. The UK deal supposedly says Mauritius can't sign. But what happens if/when they then do? [short thread]
