My latest Substack post is a personal reflection on the experience of organising care for ageing parents, and the difficulty of acknowledging one's need for care.

In the latest episode of the Careful Thinking podcast, I talk with American legal scholar @erikabachiochi about the history of the women's rights movement, men's and women's roles in care, and what a Catholic feminist perspective on care might look like.

My latest Substack post discusses the affinity between care ethics and phenomenology, prompted by the recent publication of a French book on the phenomenology of care.

In my latest Substack post, I reflect on my podcast interview with Alisha Ibkar, about her research with the protesting Muslim grandmothers of Shaheen Bagh, Delhi, and the role of care - and performance - in political action.

@LawrenceOP @Dominican_Order Thank you for highlighting this. The Universalis app simply says it's 'All Souls' today (in the Westminster diocese, anyway) and doesn't mention St Martin, sad to say.

The @Dominican_Order rejoices today on the feast day of the great Saint Martin de Porres, a lay brother of the Convent of St Dominic in Lima, Peru. Renowned for his compassion and gifts of healing, he is patron of our mission in the Caribbean which is in urgent need of aid this year. May he pray for us! New Substack post about eminent psychologist Carol Gilligan's recent revisiting and critique of her 1982 publication, 'In a Different Voice', which many regard as the foundational text of care ethics.

Surprising poll shows that Britons and French know the difference betwen moral imperative and shabby cynicism. NEW by @jlpartnerspolls: only 13% of Brits - and just 11% of Labour voters (big surprise) - support recognising a state of Palestine with no conditions. 51% oppose recognition while Hamas still controls Gaza. Similarly a French poll shows 71% of French reject recognition of Palestine state now, 38% want recognition after release of hostages and surrender of Hamas, 33% reject any recognition in short time. A peaceful Palestinian republic alongside a safe Jewish republic is essential. Both polls reveal that while Hamas is still holding 48 Israeli hostages, trying to keep repressive control in Gaza and aiming to eliminate Israel, it is way too early, a direct reward for Hamas terrorism and ammoral act of Anglo-French impotence and santimonious performance that may make two states less likely. At the moment there is no state, no constitution, no borders and no elected leadership. The pathway to a settlement can only be negotiated and recognition now is unwise for it will strengthen Hamas and undermine Fatah. The foreign policy of a great (or even middling) power can not be dictated by fear of an aggressive cohort of extreme Labour activists who will never be satisfied by this. The poll shows that the topline numbers that often get reported - eg that Brits and French publics support recognition - are misleading and the truth is very different.
