A woman claimed she could smell Parkinson's disease. Scientists tested her with 12 T-shirts—six from patients and six from healthy people. She correctly identified all the patients and flagged one “healthy” person. Eight months later, that person was diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Her name is Joy Milne, a retired nurse from Scotland, and her observation started with her husband years before his diagnosis. She noticed a distinct, musky change in his scent, long before any clinical symptoms appeared. Researchers later traced what she was detecting to changes in sebum, the oily substance produced by the skin. In people with Parkinson’s, its chemical composition shifts, producing a unique odor signature. Scientists at the University of Manchester used her ability to help identify specific compounds linked to the disease. That work has since led to the development of experimental diagnostic tools, some using mass spectrometry, others even training AI systems to recognize the same chemical patterns. The goal is early detection, potentially years before symptoms like tremors or stiffness begin. Parkinson’s is typically diagnosed only after about 60–70% of dopamine-producing neurons are already lost, making early, non-invasive detection methods like this especially valuable. © Reddit #drthehistories

Enhancing Accessibility Tip of the Day: Use of Color Color can enhance a design—but it shouldn’t carry meaning on its own. Always pair color with text or symbols so everyone can understand your message. This small change makes a big difference for users with low vision or colorblindness. #A11yTips #AccessibleDesign Link in comments.
