I will soon be starting a new academic project: a history of the war between Russia and Ukraine. I am to have the book published by 2032 (10th anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion).

The Russia-Ukraine project takes me to Budapest today. As nice a work view as anyone has. The intellectual journey is on a whole different level.

Это, похоже, сам Дерк Сауэр и написал. Он всегда был подленький такой -- с этой западной усмешкой 90-х над Россией, которую потом аккуратно заворачивают в якобы сочувствие, тревогу и "понимание русской души." Потерял свою франшизу на Vogue Russia, потерял олигархический стиль жизни в Москве -- рестораны, выставки, театры, нужные ужины, ухо Пескова, мягкое кресло свое при российском богатстве -- и теперь измывается из Голландии, залечивая старые ранки. Вся статья опереточная и обидная для любого думающего человека. Не побоюсь этого сказать: он хотел оскорбить Путина -- именно потому, что Путин читает. Молодого Сауэра приметил наш Горбачёв в конце 1980-х и дал ему карт-бланш зарабатывать в России. Россия дала ему имя, деньги, связи и сцену для его выступлений. А теперь все! И дедушка совсем выжил из ума без московских ресторанов, выставок и театров. Оперетку устроил. И мы с Сержем встречали его в Лондоне в 2003-04 годах, на Российском экономическом форуме. Серж должен его помнить -- и понимать всю эту бутафорскую кухню изнутри. У The Moscow Times больше нет ни денег, ни оп-эд контрибьюторов, ни прежнего веса, ни прежней Москвы за спиной. Вообще ничего нет -- кроме Сауэра, его старых обид и его семейки, которая и состряпала эту статейку.

Ha. There is a certain irony when an author writes a piece about what a normal place Russia is and has to hide his/her name because he/she is actually in Russia and fears repercussions. Sigh.

You just can't make this up.

Russian-occupied Crimea is now officially out of fuel. As of this morning, gas stations are only allowed to refuel vital-services government vehicles. The recent campaign of Ukrainian strikes on ferry crossings, bridges, fuel depots and roads to Crimea has turned into a de-facto blockade.

Oh no! I guess they’ll have to update “no smoking” signs. “No smoking AND no shooting of missiles”.

The key bit to watch will be whether the U.S. will lift exemptions on the Russian oil. I hope so!

There is some (inevitable) ass-kissing -- "under the strong leadership of President Trump" -- but if that's what it takes to pay for unity, it's a price worth paying.
