Dr. Ruth Simmons addressed the USS Annal Conference participants tonight at Rice University and the PVAMU Simmons Center Undergraduate Scholars presented their research. We enjoyed a great day of dialogue and hearing about innovative projects.

The Simmons Center ‘s work on the history of Alta Vista Plantation has benefited immensely from our collaborating with the descendants of the former plantation owners, the Kirby Family. Today, members of the family visited my class and we discussed the complexities of slavery.

The @pvamu_ruthsimmonscenter hosted the Black Heritage Tree Project Director, Dr. @ode2dream, today for a community listening session. Our students were engaged and eager to learn how they can play their part in this preservation effort. Big shout out to our student workers!

I am happy to announce that I am now a fellow in Michigan State University’s COIL FACULTY FELLOWS PROGRAM- AFRICA. Our team, led by Dr. Susan Wyche, will be conducting rural community-based research in East Africa (Kenya).

It is an honor to explore the history of Prairie View A&M University through the eyes and experiences of the alumni and community. Today’s interviews covered the ROTC Program, the Black Foxes (majorettes), and local community history.

The Simmons Center is proud to partner with the Black Heritage Tree Project! This National Geographic funded project includes mapping and bringing light to the narratives connected to the historical events trees witnessed related to the Black experience in the States and abroad.

My research students and I presented our community preservation work at the Harris County African American Culture and Heritage Commision Monthly Meeting. We look forward to working with them and collaborating on future projects. @SimmonsCenter
