#Tolkien trivia: what is the Elvish name for Evendim, the lake in Arnor?
English

@JRRTLore I just realised (should’ve much earlier) that all dragons were killed by men. Yes I count Eärendil as one of us. 😝
English

@DrSwami Nope. Ironically it’s the flip side if you know your Romeo and Juliet

#Tolkien trivia: just before their last meeting with Celeborn and Galadriel in Lorien, the Company hears the singing of what bird?
English

@JRRTLore I’m stumped. Good one. All i can recall is Galadriel singing the song of lamentation for partings.

@TheCinesthetic Best food eating scene ever. Always made me hungry and wanting chili.

@nickcollins1953 Not necessarily trying to refute your claim (I’m no scholar in the matter), but a huge swath of West Africa speaks French (as the national language anyway) due to a small number of Frenchmen who imposed their rule.

The idea that tiny migrant groups can linguistically overwrite entire civilisations is a myth kept alive by academic habit, not evidence. The Aryan Migration model and the Anglo-Saxon origin myth share the same flaw: no evidence that a small elite made millions abandon their own tongue.
England shows a simpler pattern - Germanic dialects were already present, and when post-Roman chaos returned, more related groups were invited as allies. Some later became kings. Their monks wrote the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and when those monks died out, the Chronicle carried on in the English people were already speaking. No mass replacement or linguistic miracle.
Scholars cling to old frameworks, like the AIT, adjusting details rather than admitting the foundations have gone. When evidence shifts, the story must be rewritten, not tweaked.

@LBC @lewis_goodall I may not have a right to inherit but my parents have a right to dispose of their after-tax income as they see fit. Furthermore, apply the same logic to everyone: if I don’t deserve it because I didn’t earn it, then neither does anyone else (including the government)
English

‘You don’t have a right to inherit money from mummy and daddy that you did nothing to earn.'
@Lewis_Goodall suggests hiking inheritance tax to 100% in order to reduce income tax and 'incentivise work.'
