I just realized that it was Kyle Busch who led the 3rd lap at the Daytona 500 this year - the lap that they held in remembrance for Dale Earnhardt Jr following the 25th anniversary following his death at Daytona. Now he’s with Dale.

You know, I miss the days when Disney actually made generational decisions with their movies. Like “hey let’s make a movie about Tarzan and get Phil Collins to do the soundtrack.” Not ruin classic franchises and remake their old animated movies into live action slop.

@BengalScoutJoel @swaynecarterjr It works like a 3-4 but you basically have 3 defensive ends on the field. Idea is from a base 4 man front you add a flex guy who is a hybrid edge rusher/linebacker who creates 1v1 matchups across the field.

@swaynecarterjr @DraftVogel You can call it 5-2 if you want as well, maybe there's something I don't understand going on here but sure looks like a standard 3-4/5-2 to me

The BEAR Front in the 4-3 has gained popularity in the college over the last few years, mostly for its effectiveness as a pass rushing formation and the flexibility it brings defensively. That effect has bled over to the NFL - the only difference is that it takes a special player to hold up in that spot in the NFL. Here’s what the usage reports look like in both college and the NFL.

What are some of the changes to evaluating defensive backs in traditional man/zone schemes as opposed to heavy match schemes? Here are some of the differences in that evaluation.

@TheJayRobins Great point. I do wonder if the first adjustments is lower hanging safeties and deeper corners. More speed at the LB position is still needed across the board too, which the draft helped with this year.

@DraftVogel Now with Offenses shifting to more TE heavy sets… could another change away from Match be on the horizon?

The NFL is moving toward heavy match coverage usage over the last few seasons - and we’ve seen the priorities shift in the NFL Draft at the position. Match is easier to learn and harder to beat because it’s reactionary. It encourages defenders to play more free and read with their eyes. Here’s a good look at how that shift has gotten to that point over the last 25 years.

Safeties are the back end of the defense and the last line against both the pass and the run. A great safety can impact in many more areas. Here’s how I look at the position group.

The cornerback position holds the boundaries of the defense together - and can contribute not just against the pass but also against the wide zones. Here’s how I assess the position:

Linebackers are the heart of the defense and oftentimes have to be the guys that make calls on the field. So much has been put on them to carry a defense in the modern NFL. Here is how I evaluate the position.
