I also feel like the implication the game alone makes is that they discovered a Rakata artifact that somehow pointed them toward the Dantooine ruins since the Star Maps are stated several times to be super duper evil

Personally I think “Revan and Malak, desensitized from a long war against a ruthless enemy, saw the galaxy from the outside and desired it for themselves” is much more straightforward and compelling than “uhhh the MMO villain who was TOTALLY there all along made them do it!”
