Today marked the official opening of the 3rd Annual Scientific Conference of the Rwanda Dermatology Society, taking place from May 20–22, 2026.
The conference brings together dermatologists, healthcare professionals, researchers, and public health stakeholders to discuss advancements in skin health, dermatological care, research, and prevention strategies relevant to Rwanda and the East African region.
Skin diseases remain a significant but often underestimated public health concern. Conditions such as eczema, fungal infections, acne, allergies, autoimmune skin disorders, and skin cancers can affect quality of life, mental health, productivity, and overall wellbeing.
Scientific conferences like this play an important role in:
• Strengthening medical knowledge and collaboration
• Promoting early diagnosis and prevention
• Improving patient-centered dermatology care
• Addressing myths and misinformation around skin diseases
• Expanding access to specialized healthcare services
As Rwanda continues to strengthen its healthcare system, conversations around skin health, public awareness, and preventive care are increasingly important. #RDS2026

LEARN SOMETHING NEW TODAY:
As a parent, you may have heard many explanations about when your baby cries constantly. But in simple terms, what exactly is Infantile Colic? When do doctors say a baby has colic, and how can parents understand the difference between normal crying and a real concern?
In this discussion, Dr. Christian Umuhoza, @crissumuh a pediatric specialist at @HospitalChuk helps answer one of the most common questions many parents struggle with about babies and persistent crying.
This short clip is only a preview. Watch the full conversation on the BHealthy Media YouTube Channel.

Hypertension Has No Age Limit And Neither Does Stroke
Your blood pressure does not care how old you are.
And unfortunately, stroke does not either.
Many people still believe hypertension, also called high blood pressure, is a disease for older adults. But doctors are increasingly seeing young people in their 20s, 30s, and 40s developing dangerously high blood pressure, often without knowing it.
Here’s what makes hypertension so dangerous:
You can feel completely normal while your blood vessels, heart, brain, and kidneys are slowly being damaged.
That is why hypertension is called the “silent killer.”
In Rwanda and across Africa, lifestyle changes, stress, unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, alcohol, smoking, obesity, and even untreated chronic stress are contributing to rising cases of hypertension among younger adults and older as well.
And when high blood pressure is ignored, the consequences can be life-changing:
• Stroke
• Heart disease
• Kidney failure
• Vision problems
• Sudden disability or death
The scary part?
A stroke can happen to someone who “looks healthy.”
But the good news is this:
Hypertension can often be prevented, controlled, and treated early.
What you should start doing today:
• Check your blood pressure regularly, even if you feel fine
• Reduce excessive salt and processed foods
• Exercise consistently
• Sleep well and manage stress
• Avoid smoking and limit alcohol
• See a healthcare professional if your numbers are high
Knowing your blood pressure could save your life or someone you love.
Have you checked your blood pressure recently?
Save this post. Share it with your family and friends. Someone may need this reminder today.

@DrbobRw It's very painful, and it can be confusing to be stomach ulcers. Indeed, she people delay treatment buying medicine for ulcers and/or using traditional hubs. Thanks for sharing.

More people in Rwanda are being diagnosed with H. pylori infections and many only discover it after months or even years of stomach pain, ulcers, bloating, nausea, or constant heartburn.
But why is this infection becoming so common?
H. pylori is a bacteria that lives in the stomach and spreads mainly through contaminated food, water, poor hygiene practices, and close person-to-person contact. In crowded households and communities where handwashing, clean water access, or food safety may sometimes be inconsistent, the bacteria can spread more easily.
What makes it dangerous is that many people carry it without knowing.
Over time, it can lead to:
• Chronic gastritis (stomach inflammation)
• Painful stomach ulcers
• Persistent indigestion and acid symptoms
• Increased risk of stomach cancer in some cases
Here’s what everyone should start doing to reduce the risk:
✅ Wash your hands properly before eating and after using the toilet
✅ Drink clean and safe water whenever possible
✅ Avoid sharing utensils or poorly cleaned cups and plates
✅ Eat food prepared hygienically
✅ Do not ignore persistent stomach pain, bloating, nausea, or burning sensations
✅ Avoid self-medicating repeatedly without proper testing
✅ Seek medical evaluation early if symptoms keep returning
One important thing many people do not realize: taking ulcer medication repeatedly without testing for H. pylori may temporarily reduce symptoms while the infection continues silently.
The good news is that H. pylori can be diagnosed and treated effectively when identified early.
Your stomach discomfort is not always “just normal ulcers.” Sometimes, it is your body warning you that something needs proper medical attention.
Have you noticed more people around you complaining about persistent stomach problems lately?
