Christians are justified and adopted children of God through the finished work of Jesus Christ. God declares us “not guilty” and He treats us as righteous. Nothing we do should be motivated by guilt (because we are not guilty) but only by gratitude and love for the One who bought us with a price. That means we engage the disciplines of our faith, never to get God's approval, but to heal from the destructive work of sin which produces misery in our hearts. The most important Christian disciplines include weekly public worship with God's people in the church, daily family worship, daily trust in the risen Christ, repentance of heart-sins, reflective meditation on God's Word, faithful prayer, and true fellowship and friendship with other Christians. By these disciplines our spiritual health is increased, bad thinking is repaired, enslaving passions are expelled, demonic influences are repelled, and we are more and more spiritually united with Christ as we are transformed into His likeness and become partakers of the divine nature, participating in the life of Christ through communion with Him. This is the goal of the Christian life. Our aim should be real progress, under grace. How do we know if we are making progress? Moving from the external to the internal. First, our relationships in the home are transformed because those relationships are so intimate. Husbands and wives humbly assume their God-given roles and treat each other with love and humility. They bring up their children in the discipline of the Lord. Second, we notice our heart-sins more quickly (anger, lust, covetousness, jealousy) and we confess them and repent, putting on Christ. We die to our pride and learn to forgive and love those who are hard to love. Third, a life of sincere contentment and joy arises in the heart through a living communion with Christ. This is the healing that glorifies God. Did you know the Christian life has a goal, and that goal is inward healing? Did you know that you can really live as God made you to live?
