Just make the season longer and stretch the 82 games out. Dropping 20 games out of the schedule has too many implications that nobody will want to cede ground on.

I’d extend the season (calendar days not total games) to remove back to backs / 3 in 5. Shortening season ain’t it all. Changes the entire structure of the league and its history.

@sunspearpoison I just don't see it that way at all. It was cathartic in the moment but meaningless in the grand scheme of what he wanted to achieve. Competitively it's frivolous. A first to one game exhibition in a game that's been shown to run as first to three. That's all he gets.

Crazy how people missed the fact that the ending is not really a triumph at all. Marty still has no real income and lost his shot to play in the tournament. Sure, he beats Endo but that's just a small W for him when taken into account the humiliation and growth he experiences.

@PatchesThaHyena I don’t see it that way though and didn’t when I watched it. I immediately interpreted it as a very compromised victory to celebrate. Non bracket first to one is basically a casual exhibition which is what it was. That’s all he had left to cling onto after going through hell.

Yeah idk man if you’re going to be obtuse about that you must never have competed at anything? An exhibition first to one game doesn’t prove anything to anyone that’s competitive. Anything can happen in a first to 1 which is why I keep stressing the format. I think the film does a poor job around the competition aspect to be honest and it’s one of my gripes.

I mean everything is perspective at that point. He wanted to be the champion before he met and lost to Endo. Endo became the mountain to get there. He still wanted the bracket when he got to Japan. He compromised to what little victory he could try attaining after all his cards were played and he couldn’t get into the real competition.

You aren’t the best through exhibition. Gotta win in bracket in a real series, not a first to 1 exhibition. He proved he could beat him but it’s meaningless and hollow. He could lie to himself I suppose but the glory and official victory in the books alluded him. Kobe, Jordan, etc wouldn’t take a regular season victory as proof of being the greatest.
