My first #CND67 session - Malta-led harm reduction session on housing first/social resilience. Great presentations by Switzerland, Uruguay, South Africa, Mexico, Malta and INPUD. An excellent way to remind us all why we do what we do.

There are angels walking among us! This weekend is filled with emotions, gratitude and reflection for me: Tomorrow February 18, 2013 was my sixth & last overdose at Insite supervised consumption site. When I was revived from where I lay motionless on the floor at booth 5, I looked to the left and noticed Sara the nurse was visibly emotional 😭. “Why are you crying?” I asked her. "Because I care!” She said. I burst into tears😭. I told her I didn’t want to do it anymore, and I didn’t know how to stop but I knew it was going to die if I kept going. She knew I wouldn't go to the hospital, and they were worried if I left they would never see me again. She allowed me to lay down on the floor by the nursing station so they could monitor me. The next day I was on the detox floor above the supervised consumption site, and my journey of fighting for recovery began again. I left the DTES with one set of clothes on my back and a welfare cheque with nothing but hope and a prayer. Don't tell me these sites don't save lives, and don't tell me they don't help you access other health services like detox, treatment, and recovery bc I've witnessed it personally in my life and countless others. The full circle ⭕ moment came 4 years later when Sara and I became colleagues and car-pooled to work together to help people who were in the same position I once was. She has met my kids and wife and we are always in contact. I feel so much gratitude for this human who never judged me and only cared about me. Today I am also 10 years and 11 months sober and grateful because I wouldn't be alive today without harm reduction and I wouldn't have the life I have today without my recovery. #recoveryispossible #harmreductionsaveslives Godspeed!
