The SOF community is mourning the loss of Warrant Officer Second Class Lachlan Muddle, 50, of the Australian SAS. He died Monday after a mid-air collision with another trooper several hundred feet above the drop zone at Jervis Bay Airfield, during the final phase of a six week advanced parachuting course. A SASR sniper and free fall specialist with thousands of jumps to his name, Muddle enlisted in the Australian Army in 1994 and joined Special Operations Command in 2007. He had spent nearly two decades in the regiment when he died doing the work that defines it. The conditions were low light. Both jumpers were on night vision goggles. Both had successfully opened canopies. The other trooper survived with minor injuries. In the words of Major General Garth Gould, Commander of Australian Special Operations: "he was skilled, professional, and remembered for his humor and his deep commitment to his nation, his Army, and his regiment."
