Terrible game of footy … It will turn won’t it? #seasonisyoung

NEW: Long-lost Francis Bourke highlight has been found ! (Thanks to Andrew Taylor who provided a large reel of Richmond v Hawthorn 1970 to digitise)

There are just 50 days to go until the start of the County Championship and the return of domestic cricket - six months of being able to watch cricket outside at some of the best and most historic grounds in the world.

My Ashes player ratings (2 matches to qualify) England Zak Crawley 273 runs @ 27.30 . 3.5 out of 10 Just a couple of innings of note . The notion of a soft dismissal being just around the corner often fulfilled . IMO it's time to move on from this 6 year project Ben Duckett 202 runs @ 20.20 . 1.5 out of 10 Very disappointing series . Got 2 or 3 good balls early in the series & couldn't escape the rut . IMO he has enough credit in the bank to survive this horror show Ollie Pope 125 runs @ 20.83 . 1 out of 10 This may seem harsh but genuinely didn't think he was the right choice at 3 . Temperament or technique wise . I'm sure he'll score a lot of runs for Surrey in the summer wish him well Joe Root 400 runs @ 44.44 . 7 out of 10 Looked out of nick early in the series but as all great players do fought through . Two hundreds & although probably didn't quite hit his immense consistency , solid enough figures . Got some good ones too Harry Brook 358 runs @ 39.77 . 5.5 Out of 10 Underachieving series for Harry . A lot of starts without going on . He'll be fine , a brilliant talent - i predict he'll have a few classic Ashes series in the next few years . Urn lifter in 2027 . Jamie Smith 211 runs @ 23.44 . 2.5 out of 10 Shot selection fail . Talented lad no doubt . Don't think he's the type to technically dig in & must continue to be aggressive but at the right times . Read match situations . Not overly great behind the stumps Ben Stokes 15 wkts @ 25.13 7 out of 10 Led by example , left everything out there . Bowling figures hold up very well , below par with the bat but that 83 was memorable . Will Jacks 145 runs @ 20.71 2.5 out of 10 IMO you don't pick a batsman / part time bowler at 8 - difficult four matches for Will Gus Atkinson 6 wkts @ 47.33 4 out of 10 Thought he bowled better than the bare stats suggest . Expected a bit more with the bat . He'll bounce back in the summer Jofra Archer 9 wkts @ 27.11 . 7.5 out of 10 A good 3 games for Archer without picking up the amount of wkts he probably deserved , always a threat & our new ball attack suffered without him . Avg 25 with the bat Brydon Carse 22 wkts @ 30.31 . 5.5 out of 10 Put everything into it , at times possibly over striving at the expense of rhythm & accuracy . No one can question his commitment to the cause Josh Tongue 18 wkts @ 20.11 9 out of 10 England's player of the series . Should've played 4 tests at least . Consistently bowled the best length for conditions . Jacob Bethell 205 runs @ 51.25 9 out of 10 Should've played from the start and this is not hindsight . Vital innings in England's only win , playing in a way conditions demanded - just as he did at the SCG in a different way with a traditional Test match innings . Clever , talented batsman . Sound technique . All format star loading Australia ratings tomorrow !
