100 GRAMS OF METH, FENTANYL, GUN FOUND FOLLOWING TRAFFIC STOP; TWO ARRESTED WALTON COUNTY, Fla— A man and woman were arrested early Thursday after attempting to flee from deputies during a traffic stop on U.S. Highway 90 in DeFuniak Springs. Deputies recovered more than 100 grams of methamphetamine, fentanyl, prescription narcotics, drug paraphernalia, and a firearm from the vehicle. At 5 am, a @WCSOFL deputy tried to stop a black Volkswagen sedan near Highway 90 and Cottonwood Boulevard after noticing a taillight out on the vehicle. The driver, later identified as Fabian Joseph Rutherford, 35, accelerated rapidly, reaching speeds of up to 90 miles per hour before losing control of the vehicle and spinning into the roadway. Deputies used a controlled stopping technique to prevent the car from taking off again and endangering other drivers. Rutherford jumped through the driver’s side window and tried to run, but when he saw deputies closing in, he quickly got onto his stomach and surrendered about 10 feet from the vehicle. A syringe was found in his pocket. The passenger, Jada Jay Urich, 19, also attempted to flee but was apprehended by deputies. She also had a needle in her pocket. A search of the car revealed 116.2 grams of methamphetamine, 3.9 grams of fentanyl, a loaded handgun, a black magnetic container with narcotics residue, multiple clear plastic bags and other paraphernalia, eight Buprenorphine/Naloxone patches and two Suboxone tablets. While being booked into the Walton County Jail, Urich was found to have methamphetamine hidden in her underwear. Rutherford has an extensive criminal history spanning multiple Florida panhandle counties, which led to him serving more than 11 years in the @FL_Corrections over four separate sentences. These include a nearly four‑month incarceration in 2008; a lengthy imprisonment from 2009 to 2014 lasting four years and seven months; another extended period from 2017 to 2021 totaling just over four years; and the latest sentence from 2023, where he was released in November 2025. He is now charged with fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, obstruction without violence, trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia, operating a vehicle with a suspended license, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and commission of a felony with a weapon. Jada Jay Urich is charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of fentanyl, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of drug paraphernalia, obstruction without violence, smuggling contraband into a detention facility, and commission of a felony with a weapon. Both were transported and booked into the Walton County Jail, where they await first appearance.
