@Dominic2306 Always concerning to me the type of analysis that thinks all of reality, as complex and vast as it is, comes down to something that some people didn't like a decade ago.
Britain had issues prior, during and after Brexit
English

@si_rubinstein Already seen online 'Wes Scheming'.
So there are good options here
English

@algorecrave She is the Jar Jar Binks of British politics.
And I for one like Jar Jar Binks, a nuanced and complex character who challenged conventions
English

@algorecrave And he still hasn't triggered an election contest. So he's resigned his position of power but not (seemingly) got the leverage to properly run - let alone win.
hahaha, Wes you muppet
English

HE’S ACTUALLY DONE IT?!?

🚨 BREAKING: Wes Streeting has resigned from Keir Starmer's Government
English

@timothy_stanley Exactly. Now is the time for Wes to put up or shut up, there's only those choices. The idea of 'shifting' dynamics etc. is nonsense
English

@johnmilbank3 @blue_labour I do find it a surprise because in no world but Keir's survival does she stay as powerful as Home Secretary.
A large portion of the Labour membership dislike her and any new leader would distance themselves from her approach to immigration
English

It should *not* come as a surprise that Mahmoud seems to back Burnham. @blue_labour is left economically, though conservative on social and cultural issues.
English

@StuartRest1688 I respect Starmer for this too. A great example of how to prove what real procedural power means.
There is another way to be ousted in practice though: Enough of the party refuse to serve in his cabinet, such that the executive cannot function (how Boris was removed)
English

I respect the hell out of Starmer for this. I was saying this for years about PMs. No one can actually force him out short of a no-confidence vote. You just don't fold under pressure and you survive. Liz Truss should take notes.
Preston Byrne@prestonjbyrne
The reason Starmer is so hard to push out is that he is a lawyer, and being a lawyer he looks at what the other side can legally force him to do right now and the answer to that question is “nothing.” He won’t leave without a no-confidence vote in the House.
English

@Aelthemplaer It is a good lesson that whilst perception means a lot to power, it is not sufficient. Sometimes power is quite literal.
So sure there is a narrative he is being ousted, but where (so far) are the unified numbers to actually make perception reality and oust him?
English

@Femi_sorry Keir was quoted as saying "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough"
English

@PolitlcsUK @thetimes In awe if that's true. I'm not sure Mahmood gets a cabinet job within most alternate administrations, due to being seen as too tough on immigration
English

🚨 BREAKING: Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and 2 other senior Cabinet Ministers have told Keir Starmer to set out a resignation timeline
[@thetimes]
English

@algorecrave This is moving from sad to iconic. Yes girl, give us nothing
English

@algorecrave I really hope she's part of a faction who put her up as the sacrificial lamb to get leadership discussions going.
Otherwise she's just been a tad meek and delusional, someone well out of her depth
English

@IberianMantis "The safest general characterisation of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato" Alfred Whitehead
English

@PolitlcsUK @BloombergUK Week is a long time in politics and timing is everything, this feels like he's got no hope.
He should already have had a plan as to how to return and hit 'go' a couple of days ago
English

🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham's allies say he intends to announce a plan to return to Parliament as soon as next week
[@BloombergUK]
English

@SethLargo One of the best speaking / writing advice I was ever given. Friend said I frequently use unspecified terms, where one has to work back through to understand.
More eloquent just to say the darn thing, even if it requires referencing the same concept twice
English

@ItsTaz1989 Yeah, I think it's fair to say the public have no appetite for trade-offs and presently exist in a world where they know plenty of things are broken but don't wish to take the pain to resolve
English

@DualOrion The other problem is that the public isn't really interested in the answers they're searching for. As soon as you tell them we need massive spending cuts, the welfare state, pensions, NHS, etc, are currently unsustainable, you can bet you'll never be elected.
English

The idea that PR would make anything better is the ultimate midwit piety. It wouldn’t solve anything and would make government even more dysfunctional and paralysed.
