Human Rights Groups Demand Release of Vietnamese Activist Detained in Bangkok Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International have called on Thai authorities to immediately release Vietnamese anti-corruption activist Le Chi Thanh and prevent his deportation to Vietnam, where he faces serious risks of arbitrary detention, torture, and an unfair trial. Le Chi Thanh, 43, was arrested on March 6 at his home in Pathum Thani province after Vietnamese authorities revoked his passport, which also contained his Thai visa. He is currently held at Bangkok’s Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Centre while appealing the revocation. Amnesty’s Montse Ferrer described the detention as “the latest troubling instance of transnational repression,” while Human Rights Watch Asia Director Elaine Pearson warned that returning Thanh to Vietnam would place him in “grave danger.” Both organizations highlighted Thailand’s legal obligations under domestic law and international human rights conventions, including the principle of non-refoulement, which forbids sending individuals to countries where they risk persecution or torture. Le Chi Thanh, a former Vietnamese police officer, has long exposed police corruption via social media. He has previously been imprisoned, tortured, and sentenced under Vietnam’s penal code for criticizing authorities. Human rights groups note a growing pattern of cross-border repression targeting dissidents, including the forced return of exiled activists to Vietnam.
