WW1 Victory medal to 547042 Sapper WJ Shorten 1st Tank Bde Signal Company. His family lived at Ontario Terrace, Dublin which is mentioned several times in James Joyce’s Ulysses. Prior to WW1 he worked as a sorter in the GPO. He died in February 1919 from “acute infection”.

Silver War Badge to Sergeant Walter Henry Woodroffe, 3rd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. He never served overseas so this is his full medal entitlement. He died in 1925 from Locomotor Ataxia and General Paralysis, historical medical terms often used to describe neurosyphilis.

A recent acquisition, an Irish silver medal for singing by Hopkins and Hopkins, Sackville (now O’Connell) Street in Dublin, won by Peggie O’Connor for singing in 1915. A year later their premises was destroyed in the 1916 Rising.

WW1 era Irish War Hospital Supply Depot badge. The depot was located at 40 Merrion Square, Dublin. During the 1916 Rising it was turned into a casualty clearing station.

Medal presented to a trooper from the 6th Cavalry Reserve in 1915. This unit was formed in Dublin in August 1914 and troopers from units attached to it were among the first military casualties of the 1916 Rising when they were fired on from the GPO on Easter Monday.

Great history evening tonight in The Oval Bar in the centre of Dublin. It was a privilege to present a 1916 themed display in the1916 Corner of an iconic Dublin bar on the eve of the 110th anniversary of the outbreak of the 1916 Rising.

War by the Irish by John McCann was published in 1946 and each chapter has an account of a military action during the 1916 Rising or War of Independence. This first edition is signed and dedicated to a senior Fianna Eireann officer by the author while he was Lord Mayor of Dublin.
