Nothing is bad for you until it is. The issue with deadlifts is that it's very easy to injure yourself doing them, and once your back is injured it's a very long recovery since you're always using your back to do things and it doesn't get enough time to fully recover and you can very quickly re-injure yourself doing very simple movements. That's why I always recommend skipping deadlifts, or if you absolutely must do them, never go for PR's, or increase your weight beyond a very comfortable amount. It's just not worth it for 99% of people.

Deadlifts are NOT bad for your back, having weak back is bad for your back.
