I have some flower seeds that were just sitting in a drawer, and I decided to plant them. A few days later I see them pushing up through the dirt. Made my heart happy. I know I used to be on here a lot more and covering all of the things. I have to admit that I’m dealing with some posttraumatic stress and have basically taken the last month and a half off from everything. My brain is processing all that I went through in the last year and it’s been…challenging. I’m grateful for friends in real life and here who reach out regularly and check on me. I’m getting better and getting back at it shortly. I have some projects and articles in the pipeline. One is the threat to rodeo and essentially the livelihood and heritage of our entire state that is IP 28. I’m doing another rodeo project all around rodeo queens. That’s just for fun, and then articles about the craziness in Portland. And of course more rodeo photography. I did that for years and will be back at that as well. I’m peeking through like these flowers. Just needed some time to be dormant.

🚨 If IP 28 passes, traditional Oregon rodeos are DONE. The PEACE Act (Initiative Petition 28) specifically strips out the exemption that currently protects “animals involved in rodeos or similar exhibitions” from Oregon’s animal cruelty laws. That means the heart of rodeo calf roping, team roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc, bareback, and bull riding events built on physical contact, restraint, and the athletic demands placed on livestock, would now be judged under laws against “knowingly causing physical injury to an animal.” Even the Yes on IP28 campaign admits on their own site: “IP28 does not necessarily ban Rodeos, only the intentional injury… of animals that are being used in Rodeos currently. This means that Rodeos can continue, provided that they adjust their practices…” “Adjust their practices”? Real rodeo doesn’t gut its identity to survive. Water it down until it’s unrecognizable, and it’s not rodeo anymore. Stock contractors, rodeo committees, contestants, and the families who have poured generations into this way of life would face constant legal risk, impossible insurance, and eventual shutdown. Our rodeos aren’t just entertainment. They’re the living heartbeat of our western way of life multi-generational family traditions, 4H and FFA kids learning grit and responsibility with livestock, small-town economies firing up, and communities gathering to celebrate the bond between cowboy and animal. IP 28 is an all-out attack on that heritage. We have to protect our rodeo family and our western way of life. This isn’t compassion. It’s cultural erasure dressed up as “progress.” Oregonians, vote NO on IP28 this November. Tag every rodeo family, stock contractor, rancher, and rural Oregonian you know. Share this. Our heritage is worth fighting for. 🤠🐎
