Northumbrian rebels slew Walcher, Lotharingian bishop of Dunholm (Durham), and his followers at Gateshead #OTD in 1080. The murder of a thegn called Ligulf by one of Walcher’s kinsmen seems to have been the last straw for a people chafing under the Norman yoke. 📸British Museum
