I think it was Bella Poarch who opened the floodgates for this kind of no-talent, nonsensical grandstanding through "facedancing" while lip-synching. I don't understand the appeal, and I never will, but she used her platform to become an actual singer and product designer. Either way, this is a disservice to the performing arts as a whole. I have a few things to say on this. People don't like hearing words that have on-the-nose definions for that which the subject fits. Freedom of speech unlocks freedom to offend, but being offended is a choice. I get why, in this case, you're offended; it's for the special needs people. Admirable as it may be, you have no place to gatekeep people from using adjectives which describe people's behavior. "Retarded" has a certain vocal music to it that's satisfying to say, and it produces a cathartic release. This word is never used to describe a special needs person. That would be immoral and cruel. However, this doesn't omit the overlapping definitions that make "retarded's" definition by root word any less versatile and more than the word "gay" means different things in different contexts. The key is the laziness of the person hearing the word. You hear the word, so you're offended. Context? Throw it out the window. The word has already accosted the offended. At what expense? Absolutely nothing but their own self-righteous melancholy. Hearing, reading, seeing, listening, and understanding. They're all tools you need intellectual discernment to extrapolate meaning from context, and it's just lazy to decide that a word is unacceptable. You'll say "empathizing" is a tool I missed, but "empathizing" is why I typed all this. The empathy is there for the special needs people, but not the excuse to police people's use of certain words.
