In 2022, four men in India were arrested for gang-raping, killing, cooking, and eating a Bengal monitor lizard. The men, Sandeep Tukram, Pawar Mangesh, Janardhan Kamtekar, and Akshay Sunil, committed the crime after they allegedly entered the core zone of the Sahydari Tiger Reserve. The Maharashtra Forest Department apprehended the individuals and uncovered the disturbing act during a check of one of the accused's mobile phone. The officials found a recording of the act which showed the men allegedly gang-raping the monitor lizard.
