It can’t be a good sign that almost no brands have put up Pride branding this year. Clearly they have assessed that supporting the LGBTQ+ community is a bad business decision at the moment.

This really resonates. My confidence is shot since the pandemic and it’s been a real struggle to connect back to the world as a result. Throwing myself into forced social situations like Tostmasters has helped a bit but still don’t feel like my old self.
Viv Groskop@VivGroskop

In today’s @guardian: Will we ever go back to the same level of confidence that we had before the pandemic? (The estimate is that it takes 30 years for society or community to recover from a major disaster) theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2…

@Noahpinion You keep referring back to this cheese thing, which has nothing to do with Degrowth. Ann Widdecombe is many things but a Degrowth advocate she is not so it’s a really weird thing to get hung up on.

Fantasy degrowth is you and your friends and everyone in Bangladesh getting a comfy life because somehow that’s what happens when we take away rich people’s private jets; actual degrowth is some old conservative British lady telling you you don’t deserve a cheese sandwich.

Indeed. But since the degrowth people realized that no one was going to vote for actual impoverishment, they started promising people that degrowth would actually (somehow) give us an abundance of housing, energy, and other material goods! noahpinion.blog/p/degrowth-we-…

When you see a word as awkward as "degrowth," the reason is often that there's something that someone doesn't want to call by its real name. And so it is in this case. We already have a word for "degrowth." It's called impoverishment.

Not a joke: EU Parliament held a “degrowth” event where they brainstorm ways to become poorer.

@AlecStapp This is disingenuous nonsense. This is failing infrastructure and ineptitude. Making a false equivalence to degrowth is just lazy.

This is what “degrowth” actually looks like in practice: Economic immiseration amid an energy crisis.

You would really think the country with chronic power shortages would lean hard into green energy.

@benedictevans @stevehaneyjr No, that’s not my point. There have been unprecedented improvements in quality of life but at every point where technological improvements mean there is an opportunity for human labour to lessen, the market finds somewhere else to allocate this labour. The growth must go on.

@stevehaneyjr @benedictevans This same prediction has failed to materialise at every leap in technological advancement in the past 100 years. Capitalism demands that this labour be more productive forcing people to work ever harder to maintain the same standard of living.

@benedictevans Of course it will: our work weeks will go from 40 hours to 10 hours. Humankind are tool makers. This is simply the progression of what we’ve been doing for millennia: we automate work so we can get closer to living Aristotle’s “examined life”.

Come on @sarstax. You offer an option to set up video chats with a tax consultant and then when the time for the meeting arrives 3 weeks later you still haven’t shared the video call link. EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. Why not just get it right?

The clearest signal to me that Generative AI is genuinely impactful is that it doesn’t exist in the realm of the tech bro. Even my tech averse parents are using it.

Anyone pretending Generative AI is just the next craze after Blockchain/Crypto is kidding themselves. The latter spent a decade searching for a problem for their solution. The number of crypto bro events I sat through where a thousand words were used to say nothing 😮‍💨

@RiotPlatforms @nytimes These comments are a hot mess. Half the crypto bros are claiming this is a joke and the other half that crypto is actually GOOD for CO2 emissions because it uses excess electricity. Absolute scenes.
