We had a blast hosting our friends from the Kataly Foundation last week to give a glimpse of our construction progress on Esther's Orbit Room. Kataly was first-in to give philanthropic dollars towards our collective purchase of Esther's. They held us with grace as we went through due diligence with them as a fairly new coop. That experience skilled us up in ways that would unlock several other forms of capital in the following years. We can’t thank them enough for their belief in our vision. It was the leverage we needed to get us to our $26M portfolio today! Thank you Kataly for stopping by 7th Street. We hope to see you all at the grand opening of Esther’s in 2027 <3

ESTHER'S UPDATE: In January, we took important behind-the-scenes steps to prepare 7th Street for construction and long-term activation. The gallery space inside Esther's Complex was fully cleared to make way for the next phase of the build, marking a transition from planning to action. We also cleaned and restored the long-vacant lot at the corner of 7th and Wood. For the first time in decades, the Wood Lot is active and will serve as a key staging area for our construction team throughout the new build. This work was completed in partnership with DP Hauling, a Black-owned dumping company led by Senni, an East Oakland native who founded his business to show young people there are many pathways to success. DP Hauling was timely, professional, and did an outstanding job, bringing care and pride to every step of the process. These efforts clear the way — literally and figuratively — for the next chapter of 7th Street!

Throughout 2025, our 7th Street Thrives initiative has been hosting mixers every two months at 7th West for businesses and organizations along the 7th St. corridor. Last month, we started something new: having our 7th Street merchants host the mixers at their business on a rotating basis. Chris Barnett, one of the co-owners of Sterling Arts Services and a member of the 7th Street Neighborhood Business Council was the first to host! Chris (pictured in the middle wearing a light plaid shirt) noted after the event, "I cannot adequately express how much it meant to have you all, our community, at the shop last night. We enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to doing it again—and here’s to our next gathering at The Crucible in December!" If you are 7th Street business or organization interested in learning more about 7th Street Thrives and the 7th Street Neighborhood Business Council, please join us Wed, Dec 10: 6pm-7:30 pm at The Crucible!

We’re excited to co-sponsor the launch of "Free the People to Free the Money to Free the People: An Organize the Rich Anthology". The event brings together the anthology’s editors—Mike Gast, Marian Moore, and Alex T. Tom—for a conversation with Donna Bransford of the Kataly Foundation. Together, they will explore the political and personal work of organizing wealth, the lessons learned from cross-class movement spaces, and the creative strategies communities are using to shift resources, dismantle harmful systems, and move toward shared wellbeing. The discussion will be followed by a book signing, light refreshments, and community gathering. This event is FREE and open to all - reserve your spot here: eventbrite.com/e/book-launch-…

Our community ROCKED the Asphalt & Concrete Demo Work Day! Eight folks showed up to literally break ground on the long awaited rehab of EB PREC's first project (in partnership with NCLT): Co-op 789.  The sun was shining through trees providing shade, tunes were playing, folks checked in and donned personal protective gear, and our fearless leader, Max Perez of LittleBig Equipment, taught us how to use jackhammers and pickaxes to demolish and pile the concrete, which will be used as riprap in the dissipator drainage pit. Abundant refreshments and Arizmendi pizza helped keep energy up for the hard, sweaty work! This is the first work of much more to be performed by a general contractor over the next 6 months to address the extensive deferred maintenance on the property. If you're interested in participating resident work days, it's never been a better time to become a member!

A few months ago, we shared Esther's updated design renderings (which were influenced by community input to better reflect 7th Street's history). We were excited by your warm reception to Esther's new look!  While waiting for the City’s approval, we discovered hazardous materials within Esther's walls that required us to undergo abatement (the process of safely and permanently removing hazardous materials like asbestos, lead, and mold to protect humans from health risks). Walls were removed, the ceiling was pulled back. We never expected Esther's had more history for us to discover. Our abatement team uncovered Esther's original structure: Walls were built on walls. Ceilings on ceilings. A boarded up stairwell. A red brick chimney upright against the roof, surrounded by 100-year-old wood. Original stage lights that shone on B.B. King, Al Green, Etta James, and the other countless legends who graced the Harlem of the West. We're delighted by these discoveries, and committed to preserving what we can to make sure our community can enjoy them too. The beginnings of an archival project are in the works, but we'll save that for a future update. In the meantime, keep an eye out for updates on our upcoming Esther's Orbit Room groundbreaking celebration!
