The 2nd Regional Steering Committee Meeting of the Integrated Laboratory Systems Strengthening (ILSS) Project has officially kicked off in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, bringing together representatives from 21 countries, Ministries of Health, National Public Health Laboratories, Africa CDC, WHO, the Global Fund, UNHLDS, and other key partners committed to advancing regional health security. The meeting is reviewing progress, sharing country experiences, and strengthening collaboration to build resilient, integrated, and sustainable laboratory systems across East, Central, and Southern Africa. Delivering remarks on behalf of the Global Fund, Dr. Fatim Cham-Jallow, Senior Medical Laboratory Specialist, underscored the urgency of strengthening laboratory systems, stating: "𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬𝘴 𝘥𝘰 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘷𝘪𝘴𝘢𝘴 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘴." She further urged countries to develop sustainability plans and increase domestic investment in laboratory systems, emphasizing that while the ILSS Project has delivered significant gains, external funding will not last forever. Sustaining progress will require strong country ownership, long-term planning, and continued investment in laboratory infrastructure, workforce, and quality systems. ECSA-HC Director General, Dr. Ntuli Kapologwe, highlighted the central role of laboratories in health security, noting: "𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘭𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘰𝘳𝘺 𝘴𝘺𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘴 𝘴𝘢𝘷𝘦 𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦 𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, 𝘰𝘶𝘵𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘬 𝘥𝘦𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦-𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘥 𝘥𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯-𝘮𝘢𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨."
