Politico Europe is a mouthpiece for the pro-war machine in Ukraine. They have no access to the White House or to any information regarding internal discussions or peace talks with Russia. Please disregard their attempts to increase tensions between Russia and the United States. They are full of 💩, and this is not the first time we’ve caught them trying to orchestrate smear campaigns on behalf of war pimps in Europe.

The latest rhetoric from Viktor Orbán directed at Kyiv once again illustrates a familiar pattern in Hungarian domestic politics: the creation of external confrontations to distract from mounting internal challenges. By portraying Hungary as the victim of alleged “blackmail” or “intimidation,” Orbán attempts to frame geopolitical tensions as existential threats, while the deeper issues facing the country remain largely unaddressed. Critics argue that this narrative increasingly resembles the construction of political “paper dragons”—external enemies used to mobilize nationalist sentiment and divert attention from corruption allegations and the concentration of economic power among political allies. Over the past decade, concerns have repeatedly been raised within the European Union about governance standards, transparency, and the distribution of public resources in Hungary. At the same time, Orbán’s consistent alignment with positions favorable to Russia has placed Budapest at odds with many of its European partners, particularly since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. While most EU members have sought to strengthen unity and support Kyiv, Hungary’s leadership has often adopted a confrontational stance toward both Brussels and Ukraine, raising questions about whose strategic interests are ultimately being served. Economically and politically, Hungary has also faced growing scrutiny over its trajectory in recent years. Critics inside the country argue that despite strong rhetoric about national sovereignty, ordinary citizens have seen limited improvements in living standards compared with many other EU members, while political patronage networks have expanded. With elections approaching, there is increasing debate within Hungarian society about the direction the country should take. Many voters appear increasingly skeptical of narratives built on external confrontation and may instead demand accountability, transparency, and policies that genuinely improve daily life. In that context, the upcoming political contest could become more than a routine election—it may represent a broader judgment by Hungarian citizens on years of polarizing rhetoric, alleged corruption, and geopolitical positioning that many believe has isolated the country rather than strengthened it.

The framing of the upcoming elections in Hungary as a stark choice between a “patriotic government” and a “pro-Ukraine government backed by Brussels” reflects a narrative increasingly used by Viktor Orbán and his allies. It is a powerful political message domestically, but it also raises an important question that deserves careful consideration. If a government claims to stand firmly with its people, the natural question is: how is that reflected in the everyday reality of those citizens? Over the past decade, Hungary has remained among the lower-ranked economies within the European Union in several key indicators—average wages, purchasing power, and access to public services. Many Hungarian households continue to face rising living costs and economic uncertainty, challenges that have only intensified amid global energy instability and inflation across Europe. Critics argue that presenting the election as a geopolitical struggle between “Brussels” and national sovereignty oversimplifies the issue. The EU is not a foreign adversary but a political and economic union of which Hungary is a member and from which it has received significant financial support for infrastructure, development, and modernization. At the same time, Orbán’s government has often taken positions that diverge sharply from the broader European consensus regarding Russia and its war against Ukraine. These stances—especially on sanctions and energy dependence—have led many analysts to question whether Budapest’s policies ultimately serve Hungary’s long-term strategic interests or risk aligning the country too closely with Moscow’s geopolitical agenda. In that context, the debate ahead of the elections should perhaps focus less on slogans and more on measurable outcomes: economic performance, living standards, democratic institutions, and Hungary’s role within Europe. After all, the real measure of a government that “stands with its people” is not rhetoric, but the tangible progress experienced by its citizens.

🇭🇺 Hungary has introduced protected fuel prices to ensure affordable supply for its people, businesses, and farmers. ⚠️ With the Ukrainian oil blockade threatening our supply, sanctions on Russian energy, and war in the Middle East disrupting global trade, Europe faces rising prices and shrinking energy resources. The situation is increasingly critical. Nevertheless, Hungary will protect its energy security and continue to insist on uninterrupted transit routes. Our people can count on us!

As Hungary approaches its April elections, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has framed the contest as a stark choice between what he calls a “patriotic Hungarian government” and a “pro-Ukrainian” alternative. In his narrative, the opposition Tisza Party is allegedly financed by Ukraine and represents foreign interests rather than national ones. However, independent evidence supporting the claim that Tisza is financed or directed by Kyiv has not been publicly substantiated. Hungary’s campaign finance regulations require formal reporting of party funding sources, and no verified documentation has demonstrated institutional Ukrainian backing of the opposition. Analysts note that such accusations fit into a broader political strategy frequently employed by Orbán’s government: portraying domestic rivals as instruments of foreign powers, whether Brussels, Washington, or now Kyiv. At the same time, Orbán’s own foreign policy record reveals a markedly cooperative stance toward Moscow. Hungary has repeatedly resisted or diluted EU sanctions packages targeting Russia, maintained long-term energy agreements with Gazprom, and expanded cooperation on the Russian-backed Paks II nuclear project. While most EU member states have sought to reduce dependence on Russian energy since the invasion of Ukraine, Budapest has continued to defend strategic ties with the Kremlin, arguing they serve Hungarian national interests. Critics contend that this approach has deepened Hungary’s isolation within the European Union and reinforced perceptions that Orbán prioritizes his relationship with President Vladimir Putin over collective European policy. The Hungarian government rejects this characterization, insisting that its actions are pragmatic and aimed at protecting energy security and economic stability. Domestically, however, economic pressures — including inflation, public sector strains, and disputes over frozen EU funds tied to rule-of-law concerns — have intensified political scrutiny. Opposition figures argue that the government’s emphasis on external threats, particularly Ukraine, serves to divert attention from internal governance challenges. Ultimately, the election will likely hinge less on rhetorical accusations and more on voters’ assessment of economic management, international alignment, and Hungary’s long-term strategic direction. Whether Orbán’s framing of the race as a sovereignty battle resonates with the broader electorate remains to be seen.

🇭🇺 What is at stake in the Hungarian election in April? 🗳️ Our people must choose: a patriotic Hungarian government or a pro-Ukrainian one. As we know, the opposition Tisza Party is financed by Ukraine. Simply put: the Ukrainians want their man in office. Too bad for them, I serve Hungary and the Hungarian people, never foreign interests.

Four years ago, the Russia–Ukraine war began. Four years of senseless killing, with hundreds of thousands of lives lost. For four years, European and Hungarian families have been paying the economic consequences of this war. Hungary has stood for peace from the very beginning. Yet even today, on the anniversary, President @ZelenskyyUa is threatening and pressuring Hungary because we refuse to be dragged into the war, refuse to send money to Ukraine, and will not give up affordable Russian energy. It is now also clear that the entire Hungarian opposition has sided with Ukraine. Their goal is chaos, fuel shortages, and higher prices ahead of the elections. They stand with Zelenskyy, not with the Hungarian people. Four years on, the stakes are clear. In April, Hungarians must choose Fidesz.

Ukraine is trying to ensure that Russian energy reaches Europe only on its terms. Nord Stream bypassed Ukraine, so it was destroyed. Now they are blocking the fully operational Friendship oil pipeline. This is political blackmail and a violation of the EU–Ukraine Association Agreement, which prohibits actions that endanger the energy security of EU member states. Hungary’s energy supply will not be held hostage. ❌
