An Independent Disciplinary Commission has today expelled Southampton from the Sky Bet Championship Play-Offs after the Club admitted to multiple breaches of EFL Regulations related to the unauthorised filming of other Clubs’ training. In addition, the Club has received a four-point deduction that will be applied to the 2026/27 Championship table. The effect of today’s order is that Middlesbrough are reinstated into the 2026 Play-Offs and will proceed to the Play-Off Final against Hull City. The final remains scheduled for Saturday 23 May, with the kick-off time to be confirmed. 📘 efl.com/news/2026/may/…

Following a recent consultation with Clubs, the League can confirm that there will be no introduction of further technology to support Match Officials in the @SkyBetChamp. The consultation found that a significant majority of Clubs in the division did not favour the introduction of a Football Video Support ‘challenge’ system. The use of Goal Line Technology – which has been in operation in the division since the 2017/18 season – will continue.

Further to the update provided this evening by the Administrators of Sheffield Wednesday, the EFL wishes to clarify that matters in respect of the sale of the Club are ongoing and subject to meeting the strict requirements as set out in the EFL Regulations. The League only received formal written notification of the preferred bidder earlier this week and has subsequently been sent initial documentation in respect of the proposed sale. This information is being reviewed and has allowed the EFL to commence its due diligence. This, however, is only the start of the process and it is important that all those associated with the Club understand that the League is required to follow its comprehensive procedures, which will include seeking further detail from both the Administrators and preferred bidder. There is no set timescale for this to be concluded. In addition, it is also important to state that the EFL Regulations do not prohibit the identity of a preferred bidder being revealed. They do however prohibit parties from announcing that a deal has been concluded subject to EFL approval.
