#otd 1865 Elizabeth Gaskell, great friend and biographer of Charlotte Bronte, died. She fell dead in mid sentence. Here is Elizabeth's grave in Knutsford and the nearby Gaskell Tower which has the titles of her novels across it.

@JohannaTC Well, it's on people's radar, obviously, but The Tenant of Wildfell Hall is one of the best books of the century. It's always losing out to Jane Eyre (also great). When I teach my Brontes course, students read Tenant & they're like, "Why did no one ever tell us about this book"

@JohannaTC Mary Barton. Most of Gaskell, actually. Romantic, passionately political, sometimes astonishingly modern.

It was in relation to this passage that Gaskell introduced Job Leigh , the grandfather of Mary's friend, Margaret. He was a typical example of the "working class botanists"

It hurts my heart so bad to see children asking for crisps & blankets on their Christmas giving tree tags, if you can donate anything at all this year you can go & pick a tag from your local Dunelm. You can find out more here: dunelm.com/info/deliverin…
