There are many ways Provincial Sport Orgs can prioritize athletes’ safety and well-being in sport. A good first step for @ONArtisticSwim would be to listen to athletes who say a coach is abusive, and not promote that coach as an expert to learn from.

Forget Wordle, riddle me this: Canadian Olympic artistic swimmers have accused Head Coach Gábor Szauder of sexual harassment, psychological abuse, racism & gender-based discrimination in a proposed class action. So why did @ONArtisticSwim just invite him to teach their coaches?

To address the fear culture that exists in Canadian sport, athlete complaints need to go through an independent third party. To promote athlete safety and create meaningful change, concerns about leadership should not be reported to or handled by the sports organization itself.

This cartoon represents the culture of fear in sport - rather than a trusting relationship between coach and athlete, athletes are made to feel weak and expendable. This abuse of power negatively affects mental health, does not promote athlete safety, and can lead to burnout.

This report highlights prominent forms of maltreatment and negative health outcomes experienced by Canadian athletes, and provides recommendations to address the harmful culture within our national team programs. athletescan.com/sites/default/…

Doug Ford is laser focused on trying to convince you of the need to destroy wetlands and farmland to build the costly #highway413. Here are 24 things he could be doing instead. A thread 🧵 What would you add to the list?

Entirely frustrating and disappointing ... It is the same thing every time. Sports organizations continue to defend their people & programs, but at what cost?? #EM203Robin #EM203Research

I have been working in the space of sexual abuse and assault in sport for over 20 years & things aren't improving. People either know what was happening or should have known. The lack of accountability is alarming. Enough is enough. #KyleBeach deserved better.

This. It speaks volumes when 12 Olympic athletes - all from different sports - come forward about the normalization of abusive behaviours in sport. It's time for change. #EM203research cbc.ca/sports/olympic…

@EM203SKooner An issue I identified related to health in the 21st century is the negative effect of our screens on sleep. There are many recommendations to avoid our screens at least an hour before bed as the blue light keeps us awake and disrupts our sleep cycle. #EM203problems

@em203gcloutier One issue related to the sedentary lifestyle of the 21st century is the popularity of gaming. This shift to e-sports pulls people away from spending time outside and engaging in physical activity, and further promotes an inactive lifestyle #EM203problems

@EM203AshEthier One issue I've identified within Access to Education is how COVID-19 has disproportionately impacted children, especially in regards to effectiveness of virtual learning, access to computers, tutors, and parental support. #EM203problems

The first 3 weeks of this course has been fun! It's very interesting to see how we've been learning in a digital environment. For example, having our lectures on zoom, using social media and many more. I'm excited to see what else what's next! #EM203Robin

@EM203Charlize Hi Charlize, I definitely feel like I’ve been getting out of my comfort zone in EM203 too! While I am excited about this new age and virtual approach to education, I am also nervous about the independence that seems to come with digital learning.

@AaronEM203 I really enjoyed learning a new task last week too! I had been wanting to learn to knit for a while, so this challenge was the perfect opportunity to start.. my next goal is to make a sock! Which task did you try?

This week I was challenged to step out of my comfort zone and complete a new task I was not familiar with. I enjoyed it because I was forced to apply new skills and critical thinking to complete said task. #EM203Robin

@EM203JJacobson I agree that the course has been low stress so far, but learning in this environment is so refreshing! I also looked at cognitivism - reading the others’ summaries was definitely helpful. Excited to see how how we continue to stay engaged this semester:)

I think the first 3 classes were smooth with little to no stress. I think the cognitivism subject was the hardest to summarize as it is a fairly advanced topic. My favourite part so far would be learning how to solve a sudoku puzzle. #EM203Robin

@EM203Lindsay @em203jesszaky Lindsay, I completely agree about turning off my notifications - both this week and last week’s lesson made me very aware of how much I use my phone while other things are going on! I’m inspired to be more focused on the present moving forward.

@em203jesszaky Jacob, very insightful post. I too have broadened my knowledge surrounding technology and how much it impacts our learning! My personal fav was definitely learning about how multi-tasking affects our quality of work, I will definitely be turning off my notifs more often, LOL!
