It's my balloon day, today. Given we all agree that feedback is a GIFT (geddit?) ... A plea to all readers of Leading Secondary English from @BloomsburyEd - please do give a review like this reader below! As a first-time author it makes a huge difference.

Have you ever apologised for this, @shashj? Or explained why you falsely claimed there was “first-hand evidence”? This isn’t a minor mistake. The grotesque lie that Israeli babies were beheaded was used to justify slaughtering countless actual Palestinian babies.

@theMadridZone What growth? He’s lost 4 games of 15. Are our standards really this low now?

🚨 Real Madrid’s growth under Alvaro Arbeloa has been tied to clear ideas of: • Strengthening the midfield for control • Reduce distances between the lines • Defend better without possession Brahim Diaz has proven to be key with his mobility, defensive effort and ability to play between the lines. @marca

@trapicanajayce @MattW_MM 😉 It’s absolutely pathetic that you are simping for Arbeloa this hard because he’s part of the Vini cult too. You people are absolutely deranged.

@EMCTeach @MattW_MM but i come from a fanily of sephardic jews, the last thing i would claim to be is spanish, so i guess we can both say we clocked someone’s ethnicity incorrectly. arbeloa still knows more about the club than u tho.

In contrast to the below thread, here is what I like about Arbeloa: As corny and cringe as some of his comments can be, he is “un hombre de la casa”. He is as much a Madrid fan as you or I — in fact, I’d argue he knows the club’s history, traditions, and culture better than 90% of fans. Some may say that means little when coaching an elite club, I disagree. Especially at Real Madrid. Let’s see how he plays his cards following the re-integration of Mbappe and Bellingham, but his bravery in recent games to make the hard decisions and the bold calls early has been refreshing. Playing the best academy prospects has been a long time coming for this club. The development of academy prospects + young players like Huijsen, Arda, Mastantuano (when fit), is in alignment with the club’s transfer policy.

More thoughts post Xabi Alonso’s sacking: There are two sides to every story. Florentino is being vilified by different sectors of fans and media. Rightly so, in many regards. Cannot condone how Xabi was humiliated in the press, never backed, and the players were allowed to get away with their tantrums. Do it all privately, behind closed doors. But… from Florentino’s viewpoint, he is managing the biggest sport entity in the world. A team and project can be in “development phase” but it still has to win. That’s what this club demands - right or wrong. Despite playing here, I cannot help but come away with the feeling that Xabi never truly understood the club culture and ethos. Read between the lines on the media leaks. After the City game, despite putting together a great performance and competing, with several players publicly backing Xabi Alonso in the pre and post match press conferences, Florentino was reportedly irate. There was talk that Xabi would be sacked the next day despite the better image. Why? Because Xabi and the players were ‘content’ with just competing. That’s not what this club demands. I think Florentino pretty early on felt like Xabi was not a cultural fit.. My complaint? He should have cut ties earlier. Sometimes you make a bad hire, if that’s the case then move on quickly — don’t drag it out. Reports that have cited Xabi’s camp claim he wanted to continue but was also “relieved”. You could see the energy was sucked out of him the last few months. It was a bridge too far for Alonso, a step too soon in his career. We all know, what works at other clubs just doesn’t seem to work at Real Madrid.

@NathanLFC1996 @leahrevelle But you feel free to go through my tweets and see where I was claiming he couldn’t defend just because he played for a different team, and then claiming he can now because he plays for us. It’s your hypocrisy I have an issue with, not your opinion.

@NathanLFC1996 @leahrevelle By “he got arrogant”, you mean he dared to leave Liverpool so now you’re acting like he can’t defend, a position you previously derided as a “narrative by pundits”.

@PieCorbett @RachelOrr @Renlovesfungus And composers of writing do so, more often than not, from a place of technical expertise. And knowing that certain grammatical choices create certain effects. I don’t think it’s either or, it’s yes and

@Renlovesfungus Knowing basic grammar is fine but it is not how to teach writing. That is about teaching composition and effect - thinking and composing like a writer. Most writing sessions confuse children by grammatical terms rather than anything about composition.

Primary writing on England is taught round applying grammar rather than composition and effect… children bung in grammar rather than creating an effect. It makes writing dull. A stronger link with reading helps and shared composition. Being writers.
