I have been evicted before. It is a violent act. It is MUCH harder to get into housing once you have been evicted. After that eviction, it was a full 8 years before my name could be on a lease. We have to prevent evictions if we want to end homelessness.

Often shelters will try to make temporary solutions to problems such as lack of ramps, but these can often be dangerous and cause more harm to those who need ramps. Other common accessibility issues in shelters are listed below.

In Joya's presentation we learned about how shelters are often inaccessible to those with disabilities. It's also difficult to quantify those with disabilities as they are often grouped under the "chronically homeless" category.

Good morning. I’m at 9 Malcolm X Blvd in Brooklyn where people are expected to be removed from a shelter they’ve lived in for over a year to be put into a congregate shelter where they share their room with 12+ other people.

🚨🚨: A source staying at a hotel shelter at 9 Malcolm X Blvd in Brooklyn contacted me saying they’re going to be cleared out tomorrow (7/29) and forced to move into a congregate shelter on Classon. They are asking for people to show up & support at 8am #StopTheTransfers

I was at a midtown hotel yesterday as homeless New Yorkers were forced out. I’m going to share what I witnessed because the level of disregard Dept of Homeless Services showed for people’s health & well being was shocking & I think it’s a window into the damage they do regularly.

Domestic violence is a primary reason families enter housing shelters. Other leading causes include eviction and overcrowding. Great team meeting talk led by @Giselle_Ashley today at @EMxSDOH_Lab

Taking a moment to address social concerns, including access to food and shelter may be more impactful in the long run than for the people we see than simply treating an acute complaint and moving on

In the emergency department, we do so well educating around and treating medical complaints - but we sometimes forget the folks we serve live in environments that force decisions that can negatively impact health
