“Hearing I was that person for her that day makes me realize this is what I want to be, this is who I want to be for not only patients, but their families as well.” The ENA Podcast debuts its new “Every Shift Tells a Story” series featuring a look inside one moment a nurse will never forget. As Nurses Week continues, listen in as Brooke Harmon – and ED nurse from Baltimore – recounts the shift she spent with a woman whose husband died suddenly in an accident and why it will be engrained in her mind for the rest of her career.

“The U.S. Department of Education’s recent decision to limit federal loan availability for nurses seeking advanced degrees does more than restrict educational opportunities and career advancement for nurses. This rule ignores the voice of health care professionals and organizations, such as ENA (ena.org/sites/default/…), as well as members of Congress, who spoke out against these limitations. It creates financial barriers which discourage nurses from investing in themselves to develop into advanced practice, leadership and other impactful roles. And, ultimately, this decision further damages the already fragile nursing pipeline – and patients will be the ones who will feel that loss, particularly in emergency departments. What this rule doesn’t change is the fact nurses remain the most trusted profession in this country. That type of trust doesn’t come simply from a label or designation, it is the result of selfless work by dedicated nurses who passionately commit their careers to helping others no matter the challenges in front of them. As disappointing as this decision is to ENA and the entire nursing community, nurses will continue to better themselves through education in ways that benefit their patients and their peers. ENA and the ENA Foundation also remain committed to providing opportunities and support to help nurses reach their goals throughout their professional journey.” - ENA President Dustin Bass, DNP, MHA, RN, CEN, NEA-BC #ENATogether

May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and it reminds us to celebrate the AANHPI nurses, colleagues and communities who continuously strive to make ENA and the entire specialty stronger. Emergency nursing is built on trust. We meet people on some of their hardest days and in their most vulnerable moments. When patients feel that their language, culture and lived experiences are met with humility and respect, care improves. This year’s AANHPI Heritage Month theme — “The Power of Unity: Strengthening Communities Together” — speaks directly to what we believe at ENA: that we are better together. That vision, though, can only be realized when every voice is heard and every nurse truly belongs. I encourage you to join me this month in celebrating and learning the histories, contributions and experiences of AANHPI communities in nursing and beyond. Ask yourself what you can do in your practice, workplace and community to help build the inclusive profession our patients and colleagues deserve. To our AANHPI members: Your presence, leadership and contributions matter deeply. ENA is better because you are part of it. — ENA President Dustin Bass • Explore Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander history here: history.com/topics/aapi • “The History and Heroics of Filipino Nurses”: youtube.com/watch?v=s08SnC… • “Nisei Servicewomen in World War II”: youtube.com/watch?v=wSD_1V…

Health care workers make up 10% of the national workforce but account for 48% of missed workdays due to assault, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Workplace violence in the emergency department leads to nurses becoming patients - or former nurses. Learn about ENA-supported bills that address prevention and prosecution, and encourage your own senators and representatives to take action. ena.org/advocacy/take-…

ENA research into workplace violence revealed that among 999 nurses who had worked in an emergency department within the prior two weeks, nearly 20 percent experienced physical violence. They suffered bruises, concussions, fractured bones and in one case internal organ damage, according to the data presented at Emergency Nursing 2025. Read stories of efforts to prevent and mitigate workplace violence. bit.ly/4sLcwnl
