Strategic national assets built with taxpayers’ money…now being sold to a Chinese private equity firm. Does that make sense? The sale of management rights for IGIS Asset Management can hardly be described as a fair process. Despite Heungkuk Life Insurance submitting the highest bid during the initial process, they were ultimately excluded. Although it is claimed that the Chinese private equity fund Hillhouse offered a higher amount, the circumstances surrounding this reversal are highly questionable. The sale advisor reportedly broke its promise that there would be no “progressive bidding” and provided Hillhouse with an unfair opportunity to raise its price. This transaction is not merely a transfer of management rights; IGIS holds significant national strategic assets, including data centers and logistics hubs. It is a reasonable inference that allowing a Chinese private equity fund to operate these assets could run counter to national interests. 📌This appears to be a clear case of deceptive and unfair trading, driven by the collusion advisor Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs to secure higher fees, while Deutsche Bank backed Hillhouse to flip the deal. Furthermore, it is inconceivable that the major shareholders of IGIS were unaware of the advisor’s decision-making process. This indicates that the sellers also prioritized a higher exit price over the fairness and transparency of the transaction. It is also highly probable that Hillhouse Capital exploited leaked or compromised information to gain an unfair advantage in the bidding. However, we must also address the negligence of the financial authorities, who failed—or chose not—to monitor a large-scale deal involving national infrastructure.
