On #MemorialDay we honour all the fallen and those who gave everything in the defence of liberty.
The people of Europe will never forget the sacrifice of so many young soldiers who fought and died in far away lands and whose bravery allowed subsequent generations to live free.
Places in Europe still organise a system, first started in 1945, whereby Allied servicemen graves are adopted, cared for, visited and taken care of by descendants of people they liberated in the Second World War.
Perhaps the best example is the Dutch town of Margraten, where some 8,000 US soldiers rest. Here, this tradition helps keep the memory of the fallen alive, and remains rooted in the town's culture and profoundly ingrained in the people who live there.
We remember. We honour them today and every day.
