On 26 April 1963, Libyan women gained the right to vote and to stand for election. I was honoured to mark this important anniversary together with SRSG H.E. @HannaTetteh and European ambassadors, hosting a rich discussion with women from institutions and civil society and male allies, within the framework of the EU programme “Support for the Democratic Transition” implemented by the Martti Ahtisaari Peace Foundation. Women’s full and active inclusion across all sectors, including the political process and security, is essential to any country’s social and economic progress. We echoed participants’ urgent call for the adoption of the long-pending law on violence against women, as well as a national action plan on Women, Peace and Security.
