#Ελλάδα: The European Court for Human Rights @ECHR_CEDH ruled against Greece for the deadly 2014 shipwreck off the coast of #Φαρμακονήσι which cost the lives of 11 refugees including 8 children. Greece is ordered to pay damages to all 16 survivors. #ΗumanRights #RefugeesGr

Great news! Hopefully, this mechanism will be frequently used. EU funds must and should be withheld from Greece if we violate the rule of law – especially when it comes to human rights, refugee rights, children rights, media freedom, and suppressing justice.

⚖️ The European Court of Justice has ruled in favour of making EU cash handouts conditional on a country's respect for rule of law. The so-called conditionality mechanism could see money withheld if a member doesn’t respect the bloc's core values, such as democracy and equality.

When you call for a law to be implemented, look at who objects to them. Facism was part of our past in Europe. Our generation says no more. I hope ECJ’s conditionality mechanism is invoked for every country that does not uphold the law or seeks to suppress justice.

🇪🇺🇧🇬 A Bulgarian MEP could be sanctioned after making what appears to be the Nazi salute in the European Parliament. Angel Dzhambazki, of the Eurosceptic ECR group, made the gesture after a debate following yesterday's ECJ conditionality mechanism ruling.

Διαβάζουμε πρώτα το άρθρο και μετά σχολιάζουμε. Δικάστηκε σήμερα με την αυτόφωρη διαδικασία ΜΟΝΟ για τα ευρήματα που βρέθηκαν στον σύνδεσμο οπαδών, διότι στην κατοχή του βρέθηκαν τα κλειδιά. Για αυτό σχηματίστηκε 2η δικογραφία εις βάρος του, εκτός απ' αυτή που αφορά τη #δολοφονία

@DFNDbreed Blanket decisions violate the law that cases must be examined individually as every case is different. The UN and EU asked him to provide the methodology and analysis that led to his blanket statement which violates Greek, EU & international laws and he couldn’t provide them. /2

@DFNDbreed No, Turkey isn’t listed as a safe country. Rather, the Greek Minister for Migration and Asylum declared that it so with a blanket statement that it’s safe for people from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Somalia, and Syria. /1

@DFNDbreed If they seek international protection, they are asylum seekers. They continue to be asylum seekers after they register for asylum and until the asylum committee of the national authority examines their case and renders its final decision.

@DFNDbreed Asylum seekers are not immigrants. These are 2 very different categories. Asylum seekers are people who seek international protection from persecution and serious human rights violations. When they are finally granted international protection (aka asylum) they become refugees.

@DFNDbreed It’s not different because it depends on the identity of the person, not the country they’re travelling from (unless there are travel restrictions for public health eg. Ebola, Covid-19). Citizens and residents of Schengen countries can freely move in the area – not all of Europe.

@DFNDbreed That’s the point. If we don’t check, we can’t presume their identity. On a road trip last summer, my husband accidentally entered another country, realised it 2km in when he saw a foreign sign, and drove back. He’s not an intruder, immigrant, or a refugee but a Greek tourist.

@klstaad Can you answer this then: A soldier on a post somewhere on the border of his country spot few people trying to sneak through, after firing a warning shot he shoot and kill one of those people. Those people didn’t have the chance to apply for asylum yet. How would you call them?

@DFNDbreed A person doesn’t have to have filed the paperwork to be an asylum seeker. Border control may detain someone who has literally just stepped 1cm inside. They must have an interpreter. If someone says they want asylum, they must be granted access to the asylum service. /1
