Claire Lai was met with a standing ovation as she spoke about her father, Jimmy Lai, at the 2026 National Catholic Prayer Breakfast. Claire Lai shared that her father remains steadfast in his faith despite being imprisoned under Hong Kong’s national security law. Arrested in 2020 and now sentenced to 20 years in prison at age 78, he endures solitary confinement and declining health but continues to unite his suffering with Christ’s. Claire expressed gratitude for the support their family has received in the U.S., hoping that with God’s help and American advocacy, her father will be freed. She closed by recalling her father’s belief that “suffering is also grace,” leading us to the foot of the Cross.

I was born in Silicon Valley in the early sixties and was baptized at Saint Josephs Catholic Church. I went to parochial school there for a few years as well. My grandmother was the Secretary for Saint Francis High School and my step up dad worked for the church in the Santa Cruz Mountains... he was a caretaker on the grounds and lived in a church property. He passed from pancreatic cancer.
