Pleased yesterday to host Dr. @umflora, Deputy Director General of RAB in charge of Agriculture Development, at the Kagitumba irrigated site in Matimba, Lot5 @NyagatareDistr, overseen daily by @HoReCo_Rw. She was accompanied by a team of officials, including the District Agronomist, to evaluate the maize fields and review ongoing harvest preparations. The delegation expressed profound satisfaction with the site’s progress and commended the outstanding condition of the maize crops. Cooperative leaders anticipate a highly productive season. While tarpaulins will be provided to facilitate harvesting, farmers are encouraged to procure additional supplies where necessary to ensure optimal efficiency.

Youth: The Real Change Makers in Agriculture 🌍✨ Across the world - and especially here in Africa - the youth are redefining what agriculture looks like. Gone are the days when farming was seen as an outdated or unprofitable job. Today’s generation is transforming it into a modern, innovative, and sustainable career path that blends technology, creativity, and entrepreneurship. 🚜💡 Young people are bringing fresh energy and bold ideas to the fields -from smart farming and agritech solutions to agribusiness startups, digital marketing of farm products, and climate-smart innovations. They are building networks, sharing knowledge online, and proving that agriculture can be both profitable and impactful when done with vision and purpose. As climate change, unemployment, and food insecurity challenge our world, the youth are stepping up as solution providers, not just participants. They are designing precision irrigation systems, producing organic fertilizers, running digital advisory platforms, and even exporting farm produce across borders - showing that farming is no longer just about the hoe and the soil, but about passion, innovation, and resilience. 🌾🔥 Let’s support and empower our youth - through mentorship, access to finance, and training - because when young people thrive in agriculture, food systems transform, communities grow stronger, and nations move forward. The future of agriculture is young, digital, and unstoppable. 🌍💚 #YouthInAgriculture #AgriInfluencerRw #FoodSystemTransformation #SmartFarming #RwandaAgriculture #AgriYouthPower

#Women play an invaluable role in #Rwanda’s #agricultural sector, serving as the backbone of rural livelihoods and national #FoodSecurity. They actively participate in every stage of the value chain from production, processing to marketing and distribution and demonstrating resilience, innovation, and leadership in transforming farming systems. Their contribution not only ensures household nutrition and income stability but also strengthens community development and the country’s broader goal of achieving sustainable agricultural growth. Recognizing and empowering women in agriculture is therefore essential to advancing Rwanda’s vision of inclusive economic transformation and long-term #FoodSecurity. 📸 @SangwaSifa @Eagle_Farmltd @SilverbackTea

Feed Like a Pro: The Secret to Fast Growth and Healthy Pigs Feeding is the heartbeat of pig production. It determines how fast your pigs grow, how healthy they stay, and how much profit you make at the end of each production cycle. A pig’s performance depends entirely on the quality and balance of its diet. Poor feeding slows growth, wastes feed, and increases production costs. Proper feeding, on the other hand, promotes fast growth, strong immunity, and timely market weight. In every pig diet, two key components form the foundation: energy feeds and protein feeds. Energy Feeds — The Fuel for Growth Energy feeds provide the power that drives all pig activity, from basic body functions to movement and weight gain. These ingredients form the largest portion of a pig’s diet. Common energy sources include maize, sorghum, rice bran, wheat bran, and cassava. While they are rich in carbohydrates, they contain limited protein. For that reason, they must always be balanced with protein-rich ingredients to ensure proper growth and muscle development. Protein Feeds — Building Muscle and Strength Protein is essential for muscle formation, body tissue repair, and overall growth. Common protein sources include soybean meal, sunflower meal, cottonseed meal, fish meal, and meat and bone meal. Since protein is the most expensive part of pig feed, it should be used strategically — always adjusted according to the pig’s growth stage. Overfeeding protein is wasteful, while underfeeding slows growth. Vitamins and Minerals — The Invisible Bodyguards Behind every healthy pig is a well-balanced supply of vitamins and minerals. These micronutrients strengthen the immune system, build bones, support digestion, and regulate body functions. Mineral premixes, salt, limestone, and dicalcium phosphate are common sources. Without them, pigs grow slowly, suffer weak bones, and become more prone to diseases. The Power of a Balanced Diet Each ingredient in a pig’s ration plays a specific role. Maize and cassava provide energy, while soybean meal and fish meal supply protein. Wheat bran and rice bran aid digestion, molasses improves appetite, limestone and dicalcium phosphate strengthen bones, and salt maintains fluid balance. When these ingredients are blended in the right proportions, pigs grow smoothly, efficiently, and profitably. Feeding Requirements by Growth Stage Every growth stage has its own nutritional demand. Piglets need 18–20% crude protein, offered in small and frequent meals to support early development. Growers require 16–18% protein and plenty of clean water for steady weight gain. Finishers do best on 14–16% protein with more energy-rich feeds to build mass efficiently. Breeding sows need about 16% protein during pregnancy and up to 18% during lactation to sustain milk production and litter health. Smart Feeding Practices for Better Results Consistency is key. Feed pigs at the same time each day, ensure clean water is always available, and keep feeding troughs clean. Avoid mouldy feeds at all costs, as they can cause digestive problems. Adjust feed quantities based on the pig’s body weight, and consider using feed additives such as probiotics, yeast, acidifiers, and mineral premixes to boost digestion and nutrient absorption. For farmers who want to take their operations to the next level, the Pig Farming and Feed Formulation Book offers step-by-step feed formulas, affordable home-mixed rations, stage-based feeding plans, and accurate inclusion rates. It’s a practical guide designed to help you improve growth performance while cutting feed costs.

The secret to high-profit pig farming? Landrace pigs. Large litters, strong piglets, and excellent milk flow make them a foundation breed.
