A thread from the book. 1. 🧵 The Destruction of the Gaelic Social Order in Ireland — conquest, law, and land. The Tudor and Stuart monarchies sought to replace Gaelic semi-communal landholding with English-style private property and a loyal Protestant yeomanry.

15. Thus, the Tudor conquest didn’t just Anglicise Ireland — it invented the Irish peasantry. Landlords above, tenants below. The one very consequential division was Catholic/'Native' and Protestant/'Settler'.

Mapmaking was once a dangerous pursuit. Take Richard Bartlett (some of his maps pictured) who accompanied English armies into Ulster to chart newly colonised lands, but in 1609 he was beheaded in Donegal because, “the inhabitants would not have their country discovered.”

Supplementation with cocoa flavanols slowed age-related inflammatory markers by 8.4%. Elevated inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) are strongly tied to cardiovascular disease. Cocoa supplementation has been shown to lower cardiovascular mortality by 27% over 3.6 years. There are also signals of a benefit for blood pressure, atrial fibrillation, and even eye health. This new study of nearly 600 older adults, followed for 2 years, found that daily supplementation with 500 mg of cocoa flavanols lowered high-sensitivity CRP, a key marker of chronic, age-related inflammation ('inflammaging'), by 8.4% per year compared to placebo. The benefits were most pronounced in people with higher inflammation at baseline, in women, and in those with diabetes. Other inflammatory markers (like IL-6 and TNF-α) didn’t change, pointing to a specific effect on CRP. Cocoa flavanols aren’t a magic bullet, but they may help dial down the silent inflammation that builds with age, offering one possible explanation for their cardiovascular benefits.

If dopamine = pleasure... Then why does chocolate still taste good when it’s blocked? Because dopamine isn’t about liking. It’s about wanting and learning. Let’s rewire how we think about the world's most popular neurochemical 🧵

More exciting results from a pilot study on creatine supplementation for Alzheimer's disease. Participants who took 20 grams per day experienced a ~2 kg increase in handgrip strength and an increase in thigh muscle cross-sectional area after 8 weeks. That's without training. These findings complement those of a prior publication showing higher brain creatine levels and improved cognition in the same participants. Definitely an area of research to keep an eye on!
