When a Mexican American says ‘I’m Mexican’ it’s basically shorthand for ‘I am of Mexican descent’.
Because of how diverse America is, peoples backgrounds take a more focus role ONTOP of American cultural similarities.
Mexicanoids are trying to gatekeep the identity because for them, the only way to experience Mexicanness is the nationalist version. They don’t worry about ancestry because their country is nowhere near as diverse.
They only worry about ancestry when their great great great grandpa was from Spain because they see proximity to Europe/whiteness as status so they cream their panties then.

At this point, mexicanoids want pochos to be PhD level experts in Mexican culture, politics, history, and societal issues in order to call ourselves Mexican, things the average Mexican themselves know little to nothing about, btw.
We also constantly need to be expressing our appreciation for Mexican culture and only engage with Mexican culture. We also still have to give them our hand me down clothes and send them money every month.
